Title: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad (GOTY)
Post by: Fredom on March 21, 2013, 10:35:51 pm
Hey guys! Well I looked around these games here and I have to say: Pretty good and informatic all. But I would recommend Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad (the Game of the Year Edition) too. I didn't find any thread about this game and I really think it's worth it. For all here, who doesn't know what RO 2: HoS is... A short description here and I hope You will understand what I say :D Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is a Shooter game which brings you directly INTO the 2nd World War. It's weapons are same like the soldiers 1940-1945 used. The game is really great and one lf the most realistic games I have ever played. But I said it's a shooter... Don't think, that's something like Call of Duty (cmon we rush there and there eow I have reached 20 kills in 5 minutes). Nooooo! This game is something else. You have to be careful at just normally waking. Everywhere could be a man who stalkes you for a while and you just didn't notice it. Mostly you are dead after 1-2 shots with a rifle.
I just made this thread because I really like the game and many others too do maybe You could post something 'bout your thinkings about the game here or what

Good game that sadly suffers quite heavily from sequalitis. If you compare it to Ostfront its not so focussed on tactical realism, but compared to pretty much everything else on offer in FPS genre now its worth picking up.
Theres 2 main server modes to look into, Classic (more hardcore realism) and Realism (more like relaxed realism). Plus theres 3 different server modes Territory (classic RO gameplay), Countdown (their take on S&D/CS style gameplay) and Firefight (TDM).
There is a big expansion coming up Rising Storm (http://www.pcgamer.com/previews/rising-storm-preview/) set in Pacific theatre with banzai charges and a-symetrical balance (bolts for japanese, semi's for US&A). It will probably be on offer then and maybe there will be a free weekend so you could wait until then

When I first started playing this game (launch) day, I was amazed how he enviorment and feeling of the game, especially at Spartanovka really made you feel like you were actually in a WW2 battle. Not like Battlefield or CoD which both does a pretty bad way of making you feel more "alive". Definitively a game worth getting.

Starting this with veterans from the first game is like the dwarf fortress of online FPS.
Getting killed instantly without ever seeing an enemy does wear on the nerves and after a while I just gave up. There is very little twitch skill required. You need patience, map knowledge and malice.
It does work very well as a simulation-ish (and seriously hardcore) game. Also nothing I've seen, even movies and books, does such a striking depiction of WWII.

Its a decent game if you like camping and have patience. And also if you look past all th fucking bugs that never get fixed. Lazy fucking devs gave up on the game after release. Still waiting for the Rising storm dlc which is taking FOREVER and is probably going to be expensive as fuck.

About camping, to capture objectives you can't really camp too much. At least in RO1 anyway it was a very mobile battlefield if you have cooperating team mates trying to cap objectives. In RO2 with the new zoom, easier shooting and harder to see models you're more likely to get randomly shot from anywhere. Plus I reckon the community is less inclined to team play than RO1 community

Yeah I was a fan of RO1 but I was never sure about RO2 after the free weekend, so I never bought it. But after I got it last night I played for a while, on multiplayer campaign, which turned out to be pretty damn fun and on top of that I did pretty good as a Rifleman ( Which I was good at in RO1 so I guess some old skill still remains lol ). It did feel good to bayonet 4 Russians in a row in a trench and get some headshots at long distances.

I think my longest shot was around 500 meters and a headshot, sadly it was before the stats wipe, and all my achievements and campaign progress got removed.

Same, just if you don't have it yet and you intend to have the full Rising Storm you might as well get it now. It won't get cheaper. Unless they sell Rising storm with RO2 included later
Apparently you can still play Rising Storm servers even if you don't buy it, but they will restrict you in some way (classes maybe)

Don't really mind a class restriction, i always play a rifleman. That way it's more of a surprise when i find a better weapon :P. Plus i don't take up valuable slots.

I still think this is one of the best FPS games out there in terms of mechanics and how it feels to play. The movement mechanics especially are way ahead of the curve. It's just a shame they fucked up all the progression tracking so badly, I pretty much lost interest in the game after losing all the class and weapon XP I'd gathered (which had been fucking hard to get as well because it didn't get saved a lot of the time anyway).

So I had played single player a free weekend it was cool, tried my hand at multiplayer earlier today.
I had 10 deaths by the end of it and 0 kills. 3 of those deaths were to the enemy, 7 were teamkills. 7. I tried to flank the enemy and go far right/far left? Teammate would snipe me. I tried to go down the middle corridors full of teammates. I would pass a teammate camping a door and he would twitch unload on me.
Was I just on an unlucky server or something?
(It had realism turned on so names dont pop up, but I think there is more than a subtle difference between a russian and a german soldier.)

Its free weekend now so there will be lots of newbies around shooting team mates.
When I played I liked 40-1 servers and TWB's. Used to play only on Splat server on Ostfront, they didn't like ro2 though
Just try to find a server where people play as a team or have regulars

You guys know that you can buy RO and RO2 on humblebundle for pretty much like 1$.
Also we might get a server rolling soon on it.

Just wait until the newbies realize how to spot the difference between German and Russian troops.

Yes, the way I usually spot them from long range is looking on how they run, the German and the Russian soldiers run differently, the German soldiers run with their weapon in one hand, while the Russians run with their weapons in both hands.

Interesting, this will definitely help me. Sometimes it's hard to tell by the uniform due to dark/gloomy maps :D

That is some awesome detail I remember them showing in a beta introduction video or something, it's even historically accurate, no?

Yeah, the German soldiers was taught to run like that (I think :P) Also if you want some old WW2 footage you can clearly see a couple of German soldiers running like they do in-game

What was the reason they had to run like that? More speed for slower reaction?

Found a non-realism server packed with people, the majority had just bought the game as well. Had a blast.
2 more questions...
Why do bullets look green? Especially MG bullets.
How do you beat singleplayer... My reinforcements keeps stopping at either 0:02 or 0:10 and never budges. All my AI teammates either get themselves killed or run outside the map until I die and assume control a la harbinger. This usually ends up as me solo vs what feels like infinitely spawning enemies, not too sure. I was also trying this on the third difficulty setting, so that may be it.

What freaked me out the most in this game is that if a very specific part of the body gets hit by a bullet the guy dies producing horrible gurgle sounds during 10 seconds. And no I don't remember what part of the body that was.

They're tracer rounds, yes all of those glowy lines of "bullets" you see from machine guns are tracer rounds, there is something that ignites on the tip of the bullet that makes it glow as flies through the air. Not every round in a MG has a tracer on it, there is usually a few normal bullets between each tracer round, they help the machine gunner to correct his aim if needed, i.e he can see the bullets are dropping too low or flying over the enemy. Normal bullets from small arms do not glow in the air like that, MAYBE at night you'd see a normal bullet glow it as the bullets become really hot when they're fired, but in day time you wouldn't see shit, just bullets snapping and cracking around you.

You guys should get the MP campaign going on that server, it's really fun.
Winners get to decide if they want to attack or not and there are like 12-13 regions to be captured and held. Winning gives you combat power, which is basically a slight reinforcement advantage.
Also, I'm MLG cuz I pop them skulls so hard they call me Skully.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Kriegsmarine, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on American soil, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire Deutsche Wehrmacht. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Telegram? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across Deutschland and your location is being triangulated right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the Deutsche Kriegsmarine and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
