Hello! Yes, It's been almost a full day, and that means time to make another character! (The addiction is now fixed)
I keep trying to make builds that allow me to avoid parry, since my ping is not so great... but I generally don't like shields. So I was trying to think of an alternative approach to shielding.
The build I would like to create, is a 1hander/shield cav. I was planning on using courser, and maybe the arabian warhorse, since I think its maneuver would be really good for side slashing groups of people with my arabian cavalry sword! I'd also like to be speedy on foot, I don't care much for shield-turtling. I'd like to push up on people with my shield, and if possible, dance around them as I fight. Even if I were just to create distractions so that they would turn their backs on my teammates (I enjoy playing support and teamwork-oriented roles)
I have a lancer cav character, and I love it. So I don't want to do that at all on this one, I want to use just shield/sword, and maybe even throwing if I can fit it into the build, even if low/0 points go into it... I'll chuck rocks! I plan to wear very light armor, maybe cavalry robes to fit with the theme, relying on the shield almost always to absorb all the damage. I haven't used shields or one handed in cRPG, so even basic tips and tricks would help me.
Things I know I need/will use:
Courser at least (riding 6) and maybe arabian (riding 7)
Arabian Cavalry sword, I like swords with long reach, and the damage looks great with this for cav!
Light armor, maybe heavy boots
Things I need help with:
Build refinement
What shields would be good to use
Technique tips for cav and foot battles with 1h and shield
EDIT: Newer build I punched up:
Level 31 (8 892 403 xp)

Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 5
One Handed: 149
Two Handed: 1

get 15/21
I believe you can get:
5 if
5ps
7ath
7 ridiing
5 wm
and aorund 140 1h wpp.

You forgot shield though, which is the pinnacle part of the build. And In my playstyle, if its possible, I would be avoiding IF almost completely, because my shield would be taking the damage.

Maybe you were thinking something like this?

You don't really need IF as Cav, specially when you use a shield.
Spend those 3/4Points in more WM/Shield or Athl.

Even for those arrows and bolts that hit you miraculously?
I started this character, and its in a place right now where I haven't made any path decisions yet, it just has all the basic points in. (shield, athletics, riding, power strike)
I bought a practice lance to carry with me just to have a little somethin with range for fighting shielders, but I just realized it's the only sheathable, couchable lance! I like it better than the jousting lance I just bought! I might carry it with me all the time. I got a few kills with it no problem!
-

For that you have the shield.
I would go for another lance though, preferably Lance or Heavy Lance.
Lance:
+ faster
+ more damage
- only 10 shorter
When your good maneuvering you can take out every other horseman with a normal lance
-
Ye sorry I forgot shield :P
-
are the shield skill 5 and 6 shields worth it? Or should I just drop those points in WM/IF? I play pretty aggressive, so if it just means the shields last slightly longer that won't benefit me that much.
EDIT: Remember I want to be fast and agile.
-
I believe 4 shield skill is enough for cav, because you don't use it a lot while on horseback. And even if your shield breaks, you can easily find another one on the battlefield because you are able to use any shield except of 3 high grade shields.
-
Or how about this build? It incorporates my first plan of using throwing. I don't need to be able to do long range throws, just gonna use it to poke down some of the STR heavy two handers and polearm users.
Level 31 (8 892 403 xp)
Strength: 15
Agility: 21
Hit points: 50
Ironflesh: 0

To be accurate on horse with throwing weapons you would also need Horse Archery, also 3 PT arent making that much damage, would only be helpful against low armored guys.
-
I was actually thinking of using it when I got dropped to the ground, or to also lob at pesky archers in things like seige. Is it really just not worth the points? Probably wouldnt throw many of them from horseback
-
Well, as I said, it wont do much damage.
You could also take 3 WM more and put them into Crossbow instead of the 3 PT.

Getting a random headshot with regular darts is hilarious

I have yet to use crossbow, it does not user power draw?
-
Shield skill matters. Especially on horse. You want your shield to protect you and your precious horse, and it can do that.

Nope it doesnt.
Also the build Kafein wrote is good, used it myself for a few gens.
-
Hmm ok. I may give that a try. What does the extra point of shield skill do exactly? (Since there is no shield skill 7 shield)
Also, if I use xbow, it would just be for on-ground yes?
-
You could use them on horse, but only Light Xbow and Hunting Xbow are reloadable on horse.
Each Shhieldskillpoint makes them 7 or 8% (at least i believe) stronger and they have a wider range they protect.

Oh hmm interesting.
I actually am now carrying around a double sided lance as a secondary, since it is couchable and also sheathable... it lets me ride around and couch those shield blockers, and sheath it without having to drop it and go back later.
So my question is, if I am using polearm just on the rare occasion, what would polearm wpf do for me? Is it only speed increase? Because I have powerstrike, I don't need a speed increase on it.
-
All you need is 4 shield skill for cav, only going to need elite cav shield and that magic cav shield bubble is just as good at 4.
IF is great for cav, you can't get your second life as infantry if you die to 2 arrows or a single lance while mounted. Put in as much as you can spare.
Don't need more than 110 or so 1hand wpf, which is default for 0 WM, doubly so if you are primarily fighting on horseback. 3 WM is a decent investment for a dedicated melee character but you can make better builds without it.
Just 3 WM allows you to have 110 in 1hand and ~80 in polearms, in light-medium armor this is sufficient for lancing. WPF isn't required for lancing but you do noticeably less damage without any, and lancing generally just feels smoother with some. If you aren't going 80+ WPF or usually just couch however it isn't worth it.

I really dont want to be lancing very often though, I have a lancer character, and I enjoy that when I play that one. I want this character to be mostly 1h on horseback, and the doublesided/practice lance is just for those tricky situations where I either don't have enough reach or I need to couch someone who is too good at blocking, or is turtling with a shield.
Another question: THe speed rating of shields determines how fast your 1h attacks are correct? And if so, a higher speed rating is better for shield yes? As I said up earlier in the build, I want to move quickly through a crowd, to attack quickly from the back. What shield would be best for this?
-
Shield speed is how fast the blocks are, 100 is the same as manual blocking, as far as I know. You should be more worried about the weight of your shield, as this affects your movement speed like any gear weight penalty. The elite cavalry shield happens to be the lightest "medium" shield with the biggest protection while mounted as well. Its just a little weaker then similar shields, but basically any of them get 3 shotted by bardiches and poleaxes (unless a loomed huscarl or something) and easily survive against ranged and melee.
-
Id go 18 agi, as a 1h cav you dont want the arabian-unless you loomed it, otherwise its up to you. :)
-
Yeah after playing this character quite a bit, I'm not sure if I will go past riding 5 anymore. I still will like the athletics and I want a lot of shield. But I think for the playstyle destrier might be best. What do you guys think? I like to do a lot of maneuvering, which made me want the arabian in the first place, but I think it might not have enough health and armor or ramming dmg, and I'm not good enough to pull it off.
Also I no longer carry a sheathable couchable lance, I now carry a one handed axe, to deal with the shielders, this also helps me when I get dismounted, as lance would be useless against a shielder on the ground. So its shield breaking capability coupled with its shorter reach, gives me a lot more options when fighting shields or face hugging polearm users. Just a general viability increase.
So I am now 3/4 slots. And if I really wanted to go crazy, I could carry my iberian mace with me too lol, but I haven't had a need to go that extreme yet.
If I decide not to use the extra points in riding to go from 5-7, I may now use them for some throwing, to fill the very last slot in my equipment loadout. I had thought of the crossbow idea, but I really like having the long reaching cav sword + the shield breaking axe. It would really only be to throw at archers while on foot and so forth. So I have saved some WPF, just incase I choose to do that.
EDIT: Oh I forgot that more riding points makes my horses faster with better maneuver, so I will probably stick to leveling riding then to 7. That way I can get better speed and handling on a destrier.
Any advice on the new plan is very much appreciated, I really like this character, and I want it to see its full potential.

Yes that looks nice but I am not doing polearm at all on this character. I have a lancer alt, I don't need this one to be the same, otherwise there wouldn't be a point in playing it!
-

The courser is terrible except if you are sure to play on super flat maps. Otherwise, I'd take an arabian over a destrier since that's the point of having 7 riding.
The horse is ofc. the first thing that needs to be heirloomed.
-
convert then 5 points form wm to if,and enjoy. Class is pretty hard to play.
111wpf in 1h is enough. I have it for few gens and i am inf shielder, and it is fast as hell.
Or lower shield and athl for one point and have a 18/21 build and 6 ps and 7 riding.
