crpg will never be realistic. Let's just come to this conclusion right now so we can stop pretending it is.
As it's been mentioned many, many times, there are far more unrealistic things than spinstabs, which realism advocates are saying is the greatest thing to happen to this game since it was someone's drunken brainfart. These things are left in the game because if it was realistic, it wouldn't be fun.
And there's the point of my post. Fun. Whatever happened to it? The game is getting steadily less and less fun and less complicated. I loved fighting against someone that can kick my ass with tricks I didn't know. That's how you get better - you learn to counter them and do them yourself. When you make everything equal, it becomes all about min/maxing and numbers. That isn't fun. Learning to block a spinstab was as easy as blocking down. It's the same as delaying any swing, you're hoping your opponent gets impatient, why should it be different against polearm users?
It also does not help noobs. A noob that started playing two years ago will be a much better player than a person that starts now simply because they will have a much wider arsenal of tricks and attacks. The game is more diluted with fewer things to learn. You plateau faster which leads to getting bored quicker
But enough ranting on my part. Can we just get back to making the game more fun, and quit trying to make this game selectively realistic?

ITT: OP assuming that his definition of fun is universal.

Good post.
I have a question about realism. If thats what devs are trying to get, why u can use a xbow with no proficiency(based on realism isnt it?) but u cant grab a shield which is mostly a piece of wood from the ground and hold it in front of u without spending points in it? (even if u could not fight 1h and shield or ur reaction and durability of it would be a lot less than someone putting points in it).
So a peasant could use a xbow without training, but he could not hold a shield. Good to know!

100% this.

For some people realism = fun. It's always a matter of taste in the end. If the developers want a game which is 60% realistic, you prefer 30% realism, then you just have bad luck. Which is not meant to troll or annoy you in any way, in fact I can feel with you if you favourite game suddenly becomes worse in your eyes, but that's just the way it is.
By the way I love the direction cRPG is going to. But of course, that's just well, you know, my opinion man.
-
Actually, I said nowhere that my definition of fun is correct nowhere nor did I say to do things my way.

What if the devs think selectively realistic was fun?

Actually, you implied it several times. Your entire argument is based off the fact that spinstabs were removed because they were fun but not realistic, which is something you made up.
-
I didn't say they were fun just due to sheer existence. Learning to counter it and doing it myself was fun.
So what's next on the realism streak?
Horsebump instakilling you?
A carpenter's hammer unable to block a massive sword or polearm?
An arrow shooting you in the leg crippling it?
Being smacked by a blunt weapon to the head crushing your skull?
Or is there a point where realism isn't fun?

Well.... the biggest part of the c-rpg playerbase came from the time where u had freedom(afaik). And didnt we all love this game because of the depth of the combat system? But yeah anyway, just my opinion. I just hate the constant limitation, and the fact that every trick got nerfed pretty much(or well for 2h that is, since thats the class i know 100%).
But if thats where the devs wanna go, then i guess thats what we do.

See, you are assuming again that it was removed because it wasn't realistic.
Could you please stop making shit up?
-
Then please, do tell why.
Also, I'll make up whatever shit I want, thank you very much.
-
Lets stop focusing on realism.
No, fuck you. Get out if you don't like it.

Because I don't like it.

Keep that attitude, you'll last long.

A yeah ago, I would agree that fun>realism but now, I'm not so sure. A year ago I didn't give a damn about theme of this game, now I do. I'll support every single realistic change devs make and I'm 100% certain that none of them would affect fun I'm getting from cRPG.
I really want to see truly realistic combat overhaul, proper theme, where ninjas don't fight vikings, where aren't 50 different colors on the screen at the same time. Although I'm lone wolf (always been), I'm 100% behind removing heroes from this game.

What if the devs think selectively realistic was fun?
Srry but this doesnt mean selectively realistic is the universal definition of fun just alike. Theres no universal definition of fun, thats why suggestions and good/bad-changes exist.
Obviously devs can do what they want, cause they do it for free. And we all have to be grateful to have this great mod.But this doesnt mean they are infallible.(its infallible correct? :D)

I'm terrified.
-
I hope that realism is the way of cRPG. Last patch was one of the greatest improvement of this mod. I hope in future we will see more and more realistic futures: slower movement, slower reloading crossbow and shooting arrows, stamina, climbing over low obsticals instead of jumping, less accurate range weapons and more.
For someone realism = FUN.
For example: someone enjoy playing Battlefield 3 - unrealistic running and jumping ... = FUN.
I enjoy also playing ArmA2 - I can sit all hour (round time) on one spot defending/reporting and not to kill or even see one single enemy - for me that is realism = FUN.
-
I kinda do miss the old days with the boulder on a stick and the loony toon Axe
But it seems even things get better in this mod or they get worse. Its never in the middle.

I'm terrified.
Cool, glad we cleared that up.
I guess this thread doesn't have a purpose anymore, since it's based on false assumptions.
