Looks like a cartoony version of Wurm online.  Wurm is good (in theory) but it's a game for people who have OCD.  Way too in depth, takes way too long to gain any skills.

If you played Ultima Online, skill gain is like 100x slower.

http://www.paradoxplaza.com/games/war-of-the-roses

This looks like a promising game maybe similar to warband:

The focus of the core gameplay is on the Multiplayer experience, but we will have an engaging and immersive story driven single player campaign designed to prepare and train players for the multiplayer experience.

http://www.paradoxplaza.com/games/crusader-kings-ii

that might be a good strategy game coming out in a couple weeks (i'll wait and see).

Didn't see that part...well Salem may be a good game in fact.

Post by: Vexus on January 27, 2012, 10:05:25 pm
It may be good if they don't do the same mistake of haven and hearth in which you start in a forest unless you have friends and there is chances there might be bears or wild boars near that you can't outrun/kill.

I raged after 4 perm deaths as I was fed up.

I'll try salem for sure as I like sandboxes but the character model is a huge turnoff and I'm not a guy who cares that much on graphics.

In H&H i started in a weird cave.I gave up shortly after that because I had no idea what to do lol.

Stupid game throws you naked in a cave without any hint :D

:D

from the creators of www.havenandhearth.com ; I played this game for about 2 years since it started, it is fun for a while but when you accomplished as much as you can in the first 4 worlds, killing everyone and never dieing it gets boring.

(click to show/hide)

Also the developers are a joke, they take a year to get 1 little object in the game.

yeah basically if you haven't played h&h then you can't really form a valid opinion on salem apart from "bad graphics"

Im hoping salem improves alot of things tho

I don't really care for graphics most of the time, I even play Dwarf Fortress.

I got some friends who judged even Warband for bad graphics and they didn't even bother to try it out. ;_;

Oh, that's nothing.

A friend of mine said that "this game is so small, what can a small game like this give to me? There must be no content in 500mb!"

This is even more retarded than being a graphics whore. Seriously.

Yep, 2 in the world, I stole 1 from evil russian village, the other one had my village leader.

Shit I went through was:
World 1 H&H: Hermit with 4 friends (We were really bad :D )
World 2 H&H: Hermit for 2 months till we got invited to "Innsmouth" which got killed by Wayneville, including 4 other big villages who got destroyed, we all formed together to make "Circle of Phoenix" and then we had an endless war with Wayneville and eventually we destroyed them.
World 3 H&H: Went with a merger of Circle of Phoenix and Wayneville, against evil Russian faction (Absolute Domination, which basically we had war with the entire world.) Eventually we killed them as you can see in the pictures above.
World 4 H&H: Pandemona, basically still the same people with a less terrible name, this is the world where I quit because I couldn't be assed to grind my ass off again.
World 5 H&H: I played a little again, but quit after a while.

I've never ever died in H&H and I kept my kills count on my signature on the forums. I was being hired by other people to kill thieves & murderers.

Which you can see here: http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=14106&start=30#p159714

273 kills ^^

CRPG PLAYERS UNITE.

MAKE A FUCKING TOWN IN SALEM AND ROLL EVERYTHING...

Well until the newbies get there grips.
Also I forgot my fucking story of the games.

I started at world 2, by world 3 I was allready hunting criminals, while also being one, basically I would keep balance, I helped someone, and I would kill members of there town, they complain, I tell them that I helped them before hand, they were none to pleased, so most of them went after me, BUT, Fucking caves are op.

Big villages are the only end-tier fun, I did exploring in other worlds and made my own village, in the later games I ran with the top village and destroyed everything.

I don't think they are gonna play Salem though because they all playing some other game I can't remember the name of.

In my opinion

X-series and M&B franchise are hardly "full" sandboxes, you just don't have linear gameplay. I agree on Dwarf Fortress, but that is not a game, it's an electronic mindfuck.

Title: Re: Salem
Post by: Banok on April 25, 2012, 01:25:13 pm
your doing something wrong, probably because area around boston is empty of resources. because of claim and SO many other players I think.

go read ma thread http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?603143-Question-and-answer-thread

and getting a mine is super easy compared to haven atm, but beta is beta. I didn't even get that far in haven.

Finally made some progress. I've got the crafting of inspirationals down, so I've got a steady rate of skill levels coming. I also found a bunch of feathers and arrows. The only problem is I didn't think to track my way out of Boston, so I've worked my way back to the rough area but can't find it specifically

How do you increase your skills here? Is it grindy?
Title: Re: Salem
Post by: Banok on April 30, 2012, 01:26:07 pm
How do you increase your skills here? Is it grindy?

I'll try to explain it. but you might have to playa nd try the game yourself.

you have inspirationals but they have skill specific values, you need certain ones to increase certain attributes which in turn are required for buying new skills. and studying them requires black bile humour which is like a stamina bar you must refill with food. so studying is much more envolved than in haven, you cannot really do it afk. and you cannot at all do it offline like in haven.
your 4 humour bars you increase by using "gluttony" to eating foods, its not radically different to food in haven in principle, although the exact mechanics are different.

I would say its alot less grindy alot more envolved and actually requires using your brain to use inpirationals efficiently. definitely takes less time to progress but more effort. like people got murder skills in a couple of days, it was hard to beleive but they must have been playing 24/7 and playing very smart.

the key thing is to get an alt with murder skills you actually have to play it, unlike haven where it may take more time to make an murder alt but you basically do it whilst logged into your main or logged off. so your character is less expendable in salem despite quicker progression. that I think is the idea anyway.

Wonderful, thanks Banok.

Played H&H with a friend recently and it was good. We even managed to set up a nice little pallisade, then we hit the exam period and of course, we had to spend more time studying than being able to play.

Hopefully this is just as good, but I'm hoping it's not as much of a time consumer as the other one could be!
Anyways, can't play now, I have work in the morning :(

G'night and thanks for the heads up!

Played for a few weeks with friends. The grind got really really tedious and overwhelming while not rewarding accordingly in "fun."
Title: Re: Salem (free beta keys on mmorpg.com)
Post by: Banok on August 18, 2012, 06:46:53 pm
it really is a niche game, I understand completely why most people would hate it.

yet grind is a matter of perspective, personally I kind of find it less grindy than most games where you kill/fight/repeat action to level up. partly because its simply something different to every other game, but also because leveling up is often actually mentally engaging. trust me with knowledge of the game of recipes/skills etc. and some basics math/economics you can level up 50 times faster than someone else. what other games are like that?

sometimes yes it does feel more like work than a game but thats more often from when you have to use your brain, than from repeating tasks. (exception of terraforming that is grindy, but you dont HAVE to have a completely flat plot ;p).

Anyone still playing?
If so, how are you getting along?

My friend and I are just starting up a little mine, we're learning the combat system, just killed our first beaver, it went mad and sort of did an extended Link style spin. Cue Benny Hill music as my friend runs away like a coward before I catch it with a stomp where we promptly bludgeon it to death. Not something we're going to try again in a hurry I don't think! xD

If anyone wants to join us, we've already coaxed Bifi in as well, then just give me a shout, it'll be nice to have some more people around to set up a little village! :)

Anyway, tried it for a bit yesterday, enough to finish tut, walk around a bit, craft some inspirationals and buy a few skills. I'll admit I like the H&H 2d isometric graphics more. It's just more pleasant to look at. This 3D thing does them more bad than good, if you ask me.

Also, the whole stats thingy is still confusing to me even as a H&H vet, I should reread the goddamn tutorial on them I guess. I'll also admit I don't really like the new stats. It felt way more "natural" for a survival game where you filled up your hunger/stamina(water) bars instead of some weird shit like black bile or phkhlelegm.

in terms of game mechanics, the new stat systems are tons better, that goes for most things like farming/skilling up. like the old thirst/stamina/hunger system was very broken later in the game when you are bashing walls to tire yourself so you can level up quicker.

as for "natural"-ness, the whole game is based around misconceptions, psuedo-science, legends and superstitions of the time period. read this http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/276301/humour

after reading that don't you think its a bit more interesting than "health" "stamina" "mana" etc.

as for the graphics, not how I would have done them either. but they grew on me personally. and when you are in the darkness with shadow on and holding a torch, it actually looks fucking badass.

Ah see, I didn't know that. I could say that it's something new and interesting. Health and stamina still do sound more natural, but I did hate the "plow with hands, drink and eat" style of leveling up stats. I like the skill system so far, but  I wouldn't call it that much different from what H&H had. Well, at least it seems that you cannot afk grind LP with curiosities anymore, since your black bile will drop and you'll study uberslow. But on the other hand this means that those players who play a lot will have a significant advantage?

Tried Gluttony eating yesterday to raise my stats, read the tutorial on it but was still confused when I was in the actual event. That circle with Humours on top is confusing for me, wish they had done it another way. Had to do 5 fail gluttony sessions before I actually managed to raise a stats *_* wasted a ton of food. Not sure if I like it.

How's the combat btw, similar to H&H?

if you play with custom client bdsalem or enders you will have option to have bars instead of the diamond, way easier to read. playing without custom client is a big no no anyway.

combat is actually very different AFAIK, didn't exactly do any pvp in haven. its actually quite twitchy in salem, you have to aim attacks and can dodge them. fight a rabbit and you will see ;). downside to this is latency will matter quite a lot, so lets hope they fix server lag completely.

Yep, noticed the bars option in Enders, MUCH better. Turning on shadows also makes the game a bit prettier. The combat seems much simpler compared to H&H, which I like. It was very deep and complex in H&H up to the point where only a select few of veterans really knew how to utilize it properly (and didn't tell anyone else).

If any beta player wants to join us (me, Garem is pretty inactive atm and Lennu is off in the army for a while), send me a PM. There's no activity requirements or any major rules like that, I'm keeping it casual. Would much prefer cRPG players than random Salem players, as it's hard to trust those.

I do have a murder alt if you need martial assistance tho.

Yeah it really is low. Well since they said that the multiserver support is basically finished and after that there will be more regular content updates (and possibly open beta), we can expect a lot more.

Update:

Quote from: Jorb
Children,

Apologies for the delay. Things have taken some time. We've been developing, and here's what's new:

* New and complete (barring a few stragglers) GUI overhaul. You'll notice. Client modders have some work to do, old custom builds won't work.
* Multiserver support: We are opening two entirely new servers tonight -- Jamestown and Roanoke -- expecting a batch of new users tomorrow. Test away, crash the servers. Notice that you can only create new characters on these servers. There is currently no way of travelling between servers.

Those are the two really major new things here. Here's a reader's digest of other (far smaller) changes:

Added nobleman's cape, hidecape, pilgrim's cape
Stamp mills now stamp all boulder types.
Mining now costs significant amounts of phlegm
There is now a pick axe. The pickaxe increases the speed of chipping ore boulders.
Mining now requires a pickaxe or a shovel
Added a tooltip to: limedhide recipe
Added a violin playing man to Boston.
Added an animation to lock installation
Added animation to kiln lighting
Turkey Feathers are now compostable
Earthworms now have better yield when fed to turkeys
Mining now crime checks
Slightly raised skill cost of cotton planting, the cloth skills and metallurgy
Reduced cost of mining
Blacksmithing now a prereq for metallurgy
Chip stone & mining phlegm costs adjusted
Added harvest animation.
All clothes should now be droppable
Garlic bread gives bbile instead of ybile
Candied Oakworth Tart & Rybread are better
Cabbagecrumbs worse
Large Urns, Sawbuck & Tanningtubs can be destroyed
Added Seaweed masque
Coalpicking is no longer an armed animation

------------------------

With this update we have cleared out the two largest points left on our todo-list for necessities, and I expect that we shall now have our hands significantly more free to work on delivering content updates, hopefully with increased regularity. There are a couple of outstanding infrastructural/backend issues left for us to deal with, but those should be possible to iron out in at least a tad more incremental fashion. Apologies if you've felt that we've left you hanging, you were -- as always -- always on our minds.

The coming week we will primarily focus on fixing expected server crashes and dealing with whatever comes up. Content should soon be the only thing we'll really be working on.

Big props and love to all of you for playing our game. I hope you enjoy it!

Update your clients.

Game is going into open beta in about a month.

Wow is that the new default UI? impressive

Yeah it is, BDClient and Ender Client are already made around it.

Also, a new content update:

Quote
We've been developing, and here's what's new:

Developed Board Industry:
Sawbuck yields Fresh Boards.
Fresh Boards build Timber Pile.
Timber Pile (in ~five RL days) yields Dry Boards (or worthless moldy boards, should you fail).
Dry Boards build Press and Carpenter's Bench.
Press presses cottonseeds and pumpkinseeds to make oils.
By a carpenter's bench you can make planed boards (or wood choppings, should you fail. Hammer & Nail proficiency is relevant).
Planed boards build Oiling Trough.
Oil goes in oiling trough.
Planed Boards go in Oiling trough.
Planed Boards soak up oil in Oiling Trough over ~2 days to become either Warped Boards or Oiled Boards.
Warped Boards can be planed again in the same way as dry boards (to make planed boards, or wood choppings, should you fail).

Boston townhouses buildable:
Two floors each. Not free.

Shed:
Large outdoor container. Can't be moved. Not free.

Emotes:
Unlocked by skills. There's a bunch of them.

Random:
New boards used here and there.
Monogrammed pillow only costs one cloth
Wood Knot & Game Board inspirationals.

Some graphics are place holders.

Enjoy!

Builds you the new outdoor large storage container (Shed) and the new Townhouse. It's kind of like the material needed for high tier crafting/building. Probably going to add more stuff to use oiled boards on later.

Well looks like I'm doing it wrong then haha. I did the random teleport and ran into another player almost immediately. He said he was friendly and actually helped me out a lot, added him as a friend and all that. He also said he had a few friends to the East who had a few settlements up and running and that if I needed help they were just as friendly as himself. So either I met one of the rare few groups who are trustworthy, or I'm going to get fucking murdered by a large group of great liars. Lets hope for the former.

Now here is the big difference between a perma death game like Salem and perma death game like DayZ. In DayZ almost anyone will fuck you over because there's little incentive to stick together, while in Salem you benefit a LOT from grouping up and having more people. So you see less random killings (also because killing someone present a risk for you to die as well). The people that fuck you over are either:
a) a PK group that kills you as soon as you joined them (which didn't happen apparently) ,
b) someone who joins your already established town and steals valuable stuff (since you're a rookie you probably don't have anything worth stealing so yeah)

Btw, are you on Plymouth, Jamestown or Roanoke?

Also, I really recommend you to read the tutorial (http://forum.salemgame.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=181) and get Ender's client (http://forum.salemgame.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=50).

Yep. The early game is pretty boring to be honest, keep foraging and making inspirationals and learn skills. Gotta learn quite a few to be able to do something in the game :)

Yeah I must admit that the inspirational grind is pretty boring. I would prefer having gained experience for the stuff I do, but that was proven to be very easily bottable, so this system is better. It gets better when you open more skills, so you have a wider range of inspirationals to craft. You also get a few by randomly doing other stuff, like making boards, or pie doughs and so on.

The whole planning/building your settlement and improving it was what was really fun for me. And the little fights we keep having with our neighbours on Roanoke these days. None of us has the ability to murder people yet, so it's a pretty "safe" form of PvP.. for now.

Also, the chief killed someone live-streaming Salem with a developer interview on twitch.tv:

I would like to point that this guy was given the opportunity to go to The Reservation where he would be showered with gifts from our raids and protected from the scum of Salem. Instead of using that opportunity he insisted on butchering Mother Natures Tree LIVE on twitch.tv for the entire world to see. I do not understand how anybody could find his actions deserving any less than the punishment he received.

So even as I get farther into it, it's just going to be grinding more inspirationals?  Even if there's more of them to craft...I don't think that really interests me. I was hoping this was just the beginning of the game and then it's more like managing a settlement and building it or some such thing.....the inspiration grinding is just incredibly boring and tedious and if that's what I'm expected to do majority of the game I don't think I'll be sticking with it....  :?
Title: Re: Salem (free beta keys on mmorpg.com)
Post by: Banok on November 21, 2012, 08:52:28 pm
yeah it is essentially a grind game, cannot deny that.

however nobody is forcing you to grind inspirationals, the only ones which are REALLY a grind are skills like murder which you don't NEED, nessarily. its a sandbox, only get the skills you want to get to play how you want to play.

secondly it didn't take me too long to aquire ALL the skills on my previous main characters, I never even used many of them.  if you know the game well you can level up 50 times quicker than someone new, theres more to it than simple time investment. something I personally like, since I have lost a couple max'd characters to resets and death.

I got all skills except a few (murder & horticulture such) in a week or so. well before I completed building my abode. you'll find the game actually kind of gets boring once you have no more skills to study for. especially if nobody is trying to kill you.

ALSO in the future when purity is added back in proper form expect grind to be reduced substantially, providing you have access to it. already you can get high purity metals and make lockets that give something like 800000 points of c&d.

people will make out alt characters in a day with enough of the best foods/inspirationals in game. which is of paramount importance in a perma death game, the ability of a village to make new warrior characters determines its true power on the battlefield. the games wars are determined as much in ecconomy as the actual battlefield.

however nobody is forcing you to grind inspirationals, the only ones which are REALLY a grind are skills like murder which you don't NEED, nessarily. its a sandbox, only get the skills you want to get to play how you want to play.

secondly it didn't take me too long to aquire ALL the skills on my previous main characters, I never even used many of them.  if you know the game well you can level up 50 times quicker than someone new, theres more to it than simple time investment. something I personally like, since I have lost a couple max'd characters to resets and death.

To be honest haven't touched it in a few days just because looking for grass and rocks for inspirationals isn't very appealing....needa just play it and hopefully get onto some actual building aspects

Yeah like I said, the early "foraging" game is pretty boring, gets better when you have the basic skills though :)

lets hope so, clothing having any stats and attributes mostly not having any effects are also 2 really big things missing, even for an beta. I remember playing alpha many months ago assuming these would be added by beta.

it is a 2 person dev team to be fair, but I dont get why they dont hire at least a few more people. it kind of impresses me and pisses me off at the same time.

Yeah I also think it would do them no harm to hire a dev or two. I guess they don't have the money? I don't see any other reason why they wouldn't do that otherwise.

I suspect its to do with loftar not wanting other people to touch his code, and they outsource the artwork anyway. as much as I love jorbtar they do seem odd people.

Quote from: jorb
We've been developing, and here's what's new:

Treeplanting
Learn Forestry. Strike cuttings from trees. Plant cuttings in pots. Watch them grow, or watch them wither. Plant trees from sprouts by carrying the pot and Right-Clicking the ground where you wish to plant the tree. Trees take about one RL week to grow up.

• Frontier & Wilderness and Natural Philosophy determine the chance of a cutting sprouting, and are relevant when striking it from a tree.
• Stocks & Cultivars and Natural Philosophy determine the chance of a cutting sprouting, and are relevant when planting it in a pot.

Claim Upkeep
As of right now claims require upkeep to the tune of 4s + (Claimed Area / 300)s per day. If the upkeep is not paid, the claim is turned off and the stone itself becomes possible to destroy. You can charge the claim with enough silver to last 2 months. Previously existing claims will be charged to last one month.

As we really should have changed this a long time ago -- we've always planned to do it, but never gotten around to it -- we will be generous enough to allow you a one week mortatorium during which you will be able to recover 75% of all invested silver when declaiming (deposits in the bank). If you really want to you can thus reinvest taking this new rule into account. After the next Game Development update declaiming will again imply a complete loss of invested silver.

Saving you from yourselves
Animals no longer attack in Boston.

Random Whatevers
New graphics: Carpentry Bench & Press
Fluid tooltips in crafting window now present correctly.
Stoves can be used to light torches
New food: Cabbage Crush Salad, Cornmash Gobbler
Baby Corn & Pumpkin Flesh count as "Any Plant"
Windy Pooh & Bluebeary require Game Meats
Plymouth Frock checks for inputs in proper order

To celebrate this joyous development of the principle of taxation without representation, his Majesty the King -- your dreadful lord sovereign -- has been kind enough to grace the colonies with his very own effigy in the form of positively dapper Equestrian Statues replacing the old, rather dull, Town Bells at the centers of all Capital Towns.

Enjoy, and Long live the King!

Well yeah, obviously. The cash shop does have a warning that this is a permadeath game and your bought stuff could be lost at any time, if anyone somehow thought it's going to be otherwise. It's not like you die every day in this game, deaths are not so often. So if you want to have a special look, you can spend $ and support the game this way. I still believe it's one of the more acceptable cash shops and the game is awesome, if you're into this stuff, since it's a niche game.

$30 to $70 for a non-permanent cosmetic skin?? $5-10 and character-bound is resonable.. $30-70 and lose-on-death is outrageous.

Game update

Quote
We've been developing for a while (holidays and whatnot. Apologies for the delay), and here's what's new.

Artifice
Most clothes now have one or more equipment slots.
Equipment slots hold Artifice items.
Artifice items and slotable equipment both have proficiency alignments, and intrinsic difficulty spans.

Hold an artifice item, right-click a piece of equipment with available slots, and choose "Slot into".

There's a random die-roll to determine if you succeed with the artifice or not. If the proficiencies in the artifice item and the target equipment match, and if you have high values in those proficiencies, your chance of success increases toward the easy end of the difficulty range.

If the artifice succeeds, the equipment now provides the effects presented by the artifice item.

If the artifice fails the artifice item is consumed, and one slot in the target equipment is permanently broken.

The objective is to kit and tool an optimal suit of gear and equipment, combining the artifice items as you best see fit. A piece of gear can only hold one of each type of artifice item.

Relevant artifice effects
Most obviously all existing attacks have been given a type. For each damage type there is a corresponding defense stat. The existing ones are presently:

Common Combat Power/Defense (includes all other types)

Concussive Power/Defense
Blunt Power/Defense
Impact Power/Defense
Piercing Power/Defense
Feral Power/Defense

All animal attacks are considered Feral. Other existing attacks present their types.

When determining damage, a comparison is made between the power of the attacker, and the defense of the defender, and the damage is modified accordingly: Up if the attacker has more, and down if the defender has. Whenever (and at whatever level) the attacker's power and the defender's defence values match, the final attack damage remains unmodified.

-------------

Obviously this system will in time be expanded with plenty of more different types of effects, both combat related and civilian.

-------------

Random fixes
Fixed a bug where you could have christmas stockings within christmas stockings.
Increased HP by ~10x on houses, windmill, smelter, stampmill, bread oven, kiln
Increased HP by ~3x on Torchpost and Brazier
Increased HP by ~4x on Walls
The combined effect of defense towers in clusters now scales asymptotically towards the effect of fifteen freestanding towers, as opposed to previous five.
Made Torchpost cheaper
Corpses now turn into skeletons after 30 minutes. This is a temporary fix until we make bodies carryable.
When summoning a player by his homestead, you can now only summon in positions from which you can draw an unobstructed line to the homestead object. This should fix the problem of summoning over walls.
Summoning now only possible on walkable tiles.
You can now walk through authority objects.
Clay troughs are now destructible.

Enjoy!

Friend of mine recently decided to "check in" with what had changed, he realised that he had logged out over at our mine, used our collected maps & other client mods to find his way back.
Having reached the river separating him from our little homestead a snake attacked him, his last words I heard over teamspeak while playing cRPG were;

"Oh my God, I've forgotten how to run... How the fuck do I run? Shit! Shit! Shit! Damnit you idiot fucking run, that snake is going to eat you! OH FUCK IT I'm knocked out. Well done me, guess I won't be playing again."

It took him two minutes from logging in to decide that he was never going to play again. I couldn't stop laughing but I'm also too scared to log back in because I can't remember where I left myself before my exams started a while back when I stopped.

Well to be honest snakes only knock you out, which results in inventory loss and 2 proficiencies, it's not that bad :D

As for not finding yourself - you now have a pointer pointing to your homestead so you can always find you way back home (if your leanto wasn't destroyed while you were gone) - then again people usually logout where their settlement is, so it's not hard to find where you were if you go on a break :)

Yep, true. To be honest every full sandbox MMO that I've played so far had a substantial grind.
Title: Re: Salem (free beta keys on mmorpg.com)
Post by: Leshma on March 12, 2013, 05:01:58 pm
That is because actions you perform are too simple in most games. For example, both Warband and Path of Exile are games where you control trained fighter and gameplay of both games consists of combat and killing the enemies.

Problem is that in Warband actions needed to kill an enemy give you so much freedom compared to PoE. After 1000 killed enemies in PoE I'm bored beyond belief. In Warband I can endure 10 times that number and even then I'm not bored, just tired. Because of that I can play Warband whole day, while I can't play PoE longer than two hours in a row.

Same goes for sandbox game, if crafting is implemented in a way where you combine some items by placing them on some grid like in Minecraft, of course that will bore you quickly. Especially if you need to wait half minute in order to obtain resources (farming/mining part) like in most MMORPGs.

I think that a team of active players can archive quite a lot, and fast. I remember the Fallen settlement we had on h&h long ago. In a few weeks we grew extremely strong. Too bad only Vibe was actually good at that game + the raid that made everyone rage quit happened really fast. Some 300strenght guy mauled himself in through our palisade, and then everything got destroyed.

That's just it, the core gameplay and game pace trumps all. I was in the same situation with PoE - to kill things you need to press 2 buttons and a mouse click, with no special mouse moves, extra aim or anything like that. It got too boring for me to continue after only 20 levels.

While in games like cRPG or Quake you don't press many more buttons, it's the core gameplay and their fast pace that make them fun. You have a lot more stuff to control and watch over, your attention/reflexes are at hard work and your mouse/aim skills are at a great test - this coupled with fast paced gameplay is what makes it fun. Popularity of Quake Live is a great example of this, because there is nothing to "grind towards to" there - people play it because the gameplay itself is fun. As for cRPG, I doubt so many people would grind so much if Warband didn't provide an interesting and engaging combat system.

Sadly, there are absolutely ZERO full sandbox games that have core gameplay/combat system that feels like it's worth staying for, thus they eventually all feel like grind.

Two Russians actually lol. We were quite newbie at that point, no brick wall that would've saved our butts in this case (which is pretty easy to set up for a group of established players, tbh). You can read more about it here http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=19902 :)

But what I really wanted to say is that having now played both Salem and H&H extensively, I can without a shred of doubt say I enjoyed H&H more. Yes it was still grindy, but the character progression was more fun and less of a chore (the system after bucket grind ofc). Salem's is way way WAY too grindy - spamming countless of inspirationals. The curiosity system of H&H is IMO just worlds beyond - you can't/don't have to spam it and it's time limited.

I'm going back to H&H as soon as the lag is fixed. I can't stand Salems ugly ass 3D anymore - imo this was a bad design choice by devs/Paradox, because 3D doesn't automatically equal good. The 2D isometric of H&H was way more pleasing to the eyes.

Salem has a few good stuff that H&H could learn from (no waking up at X hour to refuel steel torture), but overall I'd say H&H is simply better.

I thought the lag will never get fixed in H&H, they're only focusing on Salem now...

Ive also been thinking about haven vs salem, and missing some things from haven. But there are alot of terrible things in haven if you go back from salem, not just lag. timers for EVERY fucking action etc. I actually think salem's character progression is better designed, but badly balanced to be too grindy.

Also salem is still lacking tons of content haven has, all those proficiencies do nothing in salem, no taming, no other metals etc. and all the planned content not in witchcraft etc.
and salems combat is actually quite good, whereas haven's is soooo bad.

theres things I like and dislike about both. I think I enjoyed salem the most, I think I might be done with both now tho

Loftar actually took some time to devote to Haven&Hearth and put some stuff in that fixed the lag :)

I might jump into it again. Been quite a while since I last played it :)

Got a source of that? There's nothing in the announcements section of the H&H forum.
