Title: The American Games (Introduction and Registration)
Post by: Kalam on January 29, 2011, 02:12:52 pm
cRPG players blessed with the benefit of living in the Americas have been hitherto bereft of any inclusive competition such as the one that is currently being held on the other side of the Atlantic.

This is here to change that.

The Games will consist of four tournaments. All four will rely on matched competitors to arrange and judge their own duels on the NA Strategus server with a best of three out of five determining the victor. Upon completion of the duel, the participants will report the outcome directly to Game officiants, who will update the standings. The final duels, on the other hand, will be public affairs requiring the presence of an officiant.

The Tournament of Champions
What we're all here for, the Tournament of Champions is the ultimate free for all. With no item restrictions, this truly is the test of just who kicks the most individual ass. The Champion will be awarded with an artistic piece of his choosing and boasting rights. This will be a round robin tournament.
The Arena Tourney
A tournament allowing only a select few items. Namely: the tournament helms, colored tunics, practice weapons, staffs, arena shields, arena lance, sumpter horse, stones, hunting bow, and standard arrows. This will be a single elimination tournament.
The Continental Joust
An all-out cavalry affair, with no ranged weapons. This will be a single elimination tournament.
The Shootout
Ranged weapons only and any armour worth less than 10,000. Killing with melee disqualifies the duel. This will be a single elimination tournament.

Further details, rules, and regulations will be released post-registration. Registrants should either make a post here or send me a personal message with the required information.

Also, I would ask you to change the conditions on the joust, as it would

a) Require none of the skills learned by a lancer, as it is just two people ridiing at each other and  pressing the couch key
b) Take forever as its hard to get a couch going on a sumpter and the damage done by a practice lance is weak as hell

@JohnAdams: I'm shooting for a week and a half.

@Duster: You can use any equipment in the joust, so long as you're on a horse and it's not ranged. Only the Arena Tourney requires an arena lance and sumpter, since it's not just cavalry and infantry will be using practice weapons.

@Earthdforce: You may enter an alt to a competition so long as you don't already have another in it. So, yes, you may enter RageThrower in The Shootout.

Yes. There'll be a table. Speaking of...

I'd like to get some volunteer officiants, and the rest of you spread the word of the Games' existence so that we get a good group.

Then I misunderstand exactly what the arena tourney is, why would you 1v1 someone on foot with a sumpter and only a practice lance?

Then don't. The tourney is to be comprised of basic weaponry... You can still use the large practice sword / staff / small practice sword / basic bow from horseback. I worry that the bow may be OP, since there are no practice arrows and it deals alot of damage.
If you want to fight with horses go to the "Continental Joust"

Then will the archers just have the practice dagger? So if an archer was put up against, say, a shielder, he would have no chance at all!

1. You may use any weapon combination.
2. Did you really just say that? Shielders are designed to beat archers.

Bull for the Jousting Tournament.

To clarify: The European players mentioned that killing the horse disqualifies you from the joust. You must get a clean kill on the rider, or, to be a total boss, kill both horse and rider on the same pass.

I'd like to suggest the clean-kill rule, as it makes it a bit trickier and more skill-based (in my opinion), and I am an active member of PETA and revile the killing of an innocent horse . But, of course, I defer to the wisdom of the tourney officiants.

(I don't support PETA, actually, that was just a troll comment)

Clean kill for the Joust will be implemented.

Regarding the Arena Tourney, the sumpter is basically just there if someone wants to screw around on the horse.

I will be implementing a turn and run five second (or ten second, depending on the general consensus) rule for the Shootout, but this won't be the case for all the other tournaments, so melee has a good chance of running straight up to the archer and bonking him till he's dead.

Huh. Best of five seems exceedingly short. It takes about two duels to accurately feel out an opponent. That brings it to pretty much best of three, during which time you can employ at most three fighting styles, if you're feeling stupid. Realistically, best of five plays out like: Try spamming. Die twice. Try facehugging. You lose, GF.

It should be best (five) of nine at the least. Best of 13 would be better. I mean, first to three is okay for round robins, but any DE should be higher.

Anyway,

SingingInTheRain, CavalryPractice
Deafening
Champions, Arena, Joust

Rain for the first two, Practice for joust

I think a crucial factor of any fight is how quickly you can size your opponent up, which is why it's best of five. However, if general opinions differ, I don't see why we can't turn the number of rounds up.

What happens if someone runs out of ammo, or if it's a thrower versus another thrower?

Ah, figured the reasoning went something like that. Which, I'll say again, is fine for round robins*. But, as I know you're well aware, high-level dueling isn't about who clicks the buttons the fastest or most consistently--it's the player's tactics that win. And basically, with only three kills to win, that quality has little chance to shine. An actually-realistic example of a first-to-three match: You block, stupidly feint your first strike, opponent spams, you die. You attack, opponent chambers, you die. You have no idea if it was intentional, so you adapt an anti-chamber style. Opponent spams into your anti-chamber holds, you die. GF.

Yeah, unlikely to happen, but two luck kills/deaths isn't unthinkable. Then again... Huh. I just remembered, people don't die in one hit. Hmm. I'm too used to Native dueling conventions/wearing a dress. Right-o, disregard anything I've said until I test dueling with armor.

* Also realized I'm assuming the Champions tournament has robins, followed by DEs. Which is probably wrong -- kind of used to fencing conventions also. I need to find something to eat

The Tournament of Champions is indeed a round robin follow by a double elimination, but everything else is a simple single-elimination. As for letting skill shine in duelling, there's nothing preventing you from duelling with your opponent before hand if he's so inclined. In fact, I'm guessing most of the likely victors will probably have duelled each other multiple times already. In addition, none of these are simple melee duels- which again changes the game.

I do remember the days of one-hit kill duels in cRPG. Those were fun. I think it was like that due to the massive wpf we all had.

P.S I'd share my caponata with you, but alas.

@Earthdforce: if you both run out of ammo for the Shootout, the duel is a draw.

@Centurion: I'll see about that steam group.

For the record, Deafening Flood and all his alts terrify me on the battlefield. This analysis of dueling is part of that reason.

I hope I don't meet him first round in the joust.

If a person is still alive, why he should be restricted from picking up projectiles under the rain of opponent's arrows?

I believe he was saying that in a sense not referring to a previously unspoken rule, but rather referring to wit and humor in the context of a thrower rushing to pick up his thrown weaponry only to find he is not fast enough to evade the shower of arrows fast approaching.

It starts a week from now, if we get enough contestants. It'll be an ongoing thing rather than a competition that's done in one night. It'll be your job to arrange a time with your opponent to duel and report the results to an officiant. If there are any disagreements, that's where the officials come in.
