The Tournament of Champions is indeed a round robin follow by a double elimination, but everything else is a simple single-elimination. As for letting skill shine in duelling, there's nothing preventing you from duelling with your opponent before hand if he's so inclined. In fact, I'm guessing most of the likely victors will probably have duelled each other multiple times already. In addition, none of these are simple melee duels- which again changes the game.

I do remember the days of one-hit kill duels in cRPG. Those were fun. I think it was like that due to the massive wpf we all had.

P.S I'd share my caponata with you, but alas.

@Earthdforce: if you both run out of ammo for the Shootout, the duel is a draw.

@Centurion: I'll see about that steam group.

Ah, figured the reasoning went something like that. Which, I'll say again, is fine for round robins*. But, as I know you're well aware, high-level dueling isn't about who clicks the buttons the fastest or most consistently--it's the player's tactics that win. And basically, with only three kills to win, that quality has little chance to shine. An actually-realistic example of a first-to-three match: You block, stupidly feint your first strike, opponent spams, you die. You attack, opponent chambers, you die. You have no idea if it was intentional, so you adapt an anti-chamber style. Opponent spams into your anti-chamber holds, you die. GF.

Yeah, unlikely to happen, but two luck kills/deaths isn't unthinkable. Then again... Huh. I just remembered, people don't die in one hit. Hmm. I'm too used to Native dueling conventions/wearing a dress. Right-o, disregard anything I've said until I test dueling with armor.

* Also realized I'm assuming the Champions tournament has robins, followed by DEs. Which is probably wrong -- kind of used to fencing conventions also. I need to find something to eat

For the record, Deafening Flood and all his alts terrify me on the battlefield. This analysis of dueling is part of that reason.

I hope I don't meet him first round in the joust.

If a person is still alive, why he should be restricted from picking up projectiles under the rain of opponent's arrows?

I believe he was saying that in a sense not referring to a previously unspoken rule, but rather referring to wit and humor in the context of a thrower rushing to pick up his thrown weaponry only to find he is not fast enough to evade the shower of arrows fast approaching.

Probably. But I still wanted to clear it up for myself.

Yep, you're perfectly welcome to pick up spent ammo. Just don't use it as melee for Shootout and it's fine.
