Title: Once in a Blue Moon and Various Nostalgia
Post by: Bjord on September 24, 2011, 05:12:03 pm
So yeah, sometimes I get a bit sentimental. I hope you can bear it!

This is a shout out to all the old players I acquainted with in 2010 and whom I both loved and hated(as most of you know, I have always been pretty temperamental and as such I got myself into quite a lot of conflicts), because at the moment I felt like indulging myself in immense nostalgia.

I really miss those days, DaveUKR still played and he was probably the one I got along with the least. But as time passed, you still grew fond of people despite of your past grievances. Back then the playerbase was still relatively small and the community had a more tight and close feel to it; everyone knew almost everyone. Now the community has gone through some kind of transformation. I guess it's inevitable, really. What with so many new players and new clans. I think I've slipped into the void of unknown today, mostly because I can't play anymore. It is however an interesting perspective, to peer in from the outside. I would start a rant, but this is not the thread for that. :)

I was pretty much of an asshat a year ago, and I still am somewhat. But now I consider myself an endearing asshat. Mainly because I've been one consistently and people got used to it. That's what's so interesting, the aspect of long-term exposure to different people; no matter how much a person acts like a jerk, after a year you become accepted for who you are. Of course, there are limits to people's patience. Take Michael aka Finished for example, he was just plain frustrating as a person. Still, the memory of him lives on in those who remember him. And that is a sort of consolation.

I guess what I want to say is that despite this being a game, you can still get attached to people.

Anyhow, one of my brightest memories of cRPG is when Strategus launched for the first time. It really gave leeway for the establishment of clans. It was to say the least one of the major breakthroughs in this mod. Before, clans didn't really have much of a purpose other than being a clan for the sole sake of existing. Now with Strategus, clans became factions with different ideas and different styles. And with difference of opinion, conflict is not far behind. Fortunately, all these ideas and opinions were just a play of roles to promote a sense of political competition and warfare. It never really got out of hand, unlike today's Strategus where when something goes wrong it sets off huge chains of dramatic threads.

So with these stronger and more centralized clans, a lot of good things followed. The first thing to happen was the branching off from Native. Most people back then didn't only limit themselves to cRPG as it wasn't as addictive as it is today, believe it or not. By branching off I mean the community distinctly became its own. There would be people buying Warband just so they could play cRPG, and others who would exclaim total denouncement of Native. And thus we had our own little community. With established clans like that it really boosted the mod. I think I can safely say that without some of the clans in the older days of cRPG, some things and features might not have been possible. Remember that, devs. We're not just capable of taking, we can also give.

Anyway, here's sentimentality as promised:

I might have forgotten some, in that case just throw me a PM and I'll make sure to add you.

I would hardly say that everyone knew everyone lol, whilst there were less players on at one time than now, the community was still relatively large for such a new mod and there are a good amount of people who say they played since cRPG was first released like I did, that don't know me and I don't know them ( by name ), simply because I probably played when they weren't playing and vice versa.

Still, do have nostalgic memories, some bad, i.e when the only gold and xp rewards you got were for getting a kill, leading to 99% of players jumping into a fight spamming to get the kill and killing their team mates in the process . But some funny ones, remembering Jesus pissing everyone off, and also monkey with their skills.

My first memories of Strategus - it was fun until everyone realised archer spam was the best way and then most sieges were just 3 hours of being shot by arrows.

I remember when I first started playing, you were some sort of small hero to me after you were 1v~15 and gradually killed them all one by one.

Then you were an asshat to me.

P.S.
I don't think I ever seen you throw anything except hate towards DaveUKR, I still don't get why most people don't like him.

"Ok everyone, wait til there's only 2 minutes left. The stand aside forcav to plow in, follow them inside, kill them all!".
...
"Argh, why didn't anyone attack, "
...
"1 MIN TO RESET KILL KILL"

edit: Before, the information of your character on the database would only be updated once every...30 minutes? I don't even remember how long it was actually. The server would shut down and restart, taking into account any new equip, lvls, etc. It would do it on the dot every time, even if it was in the middle of a battle.

Lol, I forgot about the reset to update info, that was annoying. XP barn was good fun, but did just turn the map into a grind map, was hilarious when firebombs were added and we just filled the barn with them and burned everyone inside.

It really was.

Also, I remember when Jesus had that awl pike. He used only the stab and people still couldn't block it. 3 or 4 guys in a row on Old Fort map.

Guess that says a lot about the skill level back then.

I thought it was the plain old Pike that Jesus used to pwn a ton of people and yes, the difference in skill of the average player between now and then is immense.

There isn't a single Jacko (weren doesn't count) in that list, I cannot approve. I don't miss the plate grind, but I still think back on it with a warn fuzzy feeling. Only pros had plate, or something. And once Oberyn won the game, hero grinding like a boss. And xbows were gimped.

Varyag was the original monster of cRPG. GLA swingable on armored horse, so much carnage. And yeah, I grinded so much that one version...Grind was more addictive when it was entirely dependent on proximity and own kills.

You're probably right, but you must've not been a loud mouth like me then.

Basically, all of the mentions have been people I've either had an argument with, whom I've spoken to on more than one occasion or whom I've battled it out with like a boss.

Some people all of the three.

Btw, I've seen the old Jesus playing recently a couple of times. He still kicks ass really hard.

I think that move would make many veterans leave the mod.

It's been roughly a year now and I can feel how cRPG is becoming much like Native when I stopped playing it. Repetitive, boring, rage-inducing. More importantly, the mindset and the behavior of players changed. Before, the game had that lighthearted feeling. I never realised how important that was until we lost it with the january patch. People weren't hating each other. Most of the time, it was just petty rivalry. Now everybody is forced to win. The mindset evolved into what I can now call crap. What was meant to reduce the grind only did one thing : make it invasive, make it the backbone of the whole mod, governing everything the player does. Instead of three peasants hiding behind a house, now you have roofcamping, FOTM builds, balance lobbyism, delaying, glitching, hacking... Now people do everything they can to win, even playing chars they don't like. Because winning = earning gold and xp. And you need gold because otherwise you can't upkeep your equipment. If there was no need to win, the game would be much more enjoyable for everyone. If winning is the only way to have fun, most people will only have fun during half their playtime.

You can't really force people into not grinding if you allow char progress. Giving oneself goals is a natural way of enjoying something. Linking the grind to a behavior will lead to an increase in that behavior. In this case this is winning. At start everybody thought it was good because people would play in teams etc. But we didn't expected how it would completly change the way individuals play. Now I can say that it created many problems for only a slight increase in teamwork.

Things are finally going back to normal for me as I start looping between various games again, instead of playing cRPG nearly exclusively.

PS : I remember like 95% of your list. And I'm forced to note that many, many vets don't play anymore.

Of course I remember them. And Eirikur was Muhammed, leader of Shieldings. And I was pretty much on par with duckduckmoo, dueled him a lot in Native as well! However, the first horseman seems to have slipped my mind.

Yeah, that was hilarious. I gave that poor kid Torp a hard time too for being in Ninjas. My behaviour was sort of like a natural disaster, people accepted the ruthless nature of it with a pinch of salt(Swedish saying).

Anyhow, lately I've developed a more healthy respect for you guys. And especially you, Khorin.
Thanks for the heartwarming words. Also yes..! Keyoke was your name then, will fix that in the list.

You were always the irrational voice, Mte. :P

Anyway, you were one bad ass archer. Oh and speaking of archers, how did I forget about Mustikki? And there's one more memorable archer I can't seem to remember the name of. He also played as polearmer, his name started with S-something... Spammed like crazy, pissing everyone of.

Well I didn't play that early in development but I remember one especially deadly horse archer. Can't remember his name but I know he always wore Surcoat over mail and had a longsword as sidearm, riding Cata horse. I think he was best horse archer at that time. Do you remember him by any chance?

Wasn't this BC_Shrek guy or something the first one to ever get the black armour? I thought that was quite memorable as well.

And yea the game was a lot of fun back then, even though archery was insane. The feeling you got when finally being able to afford the armour/horse/weapon you wanted for so long was just great. But obviously something had to be done after nearly everyone was walking around in full plate 24/7.

I remember some guy called Assurniar or something. While every vet was on a plated horse, he rode a courser. I remember dehorsing him and thinking 'now you're mine!'. I hit him once while he was on the ground, then he just completely outspammed me and killed me in 2 hits.

For me as a relatively new player pre januari patch those were hard times. I started early december. I kept thinking that the character advantages would even out eventually. Don't think I would've ever catched up with those lvl 40+ guys. Luckily the patch saved my ass.

Still even I think back about those times with some kind of remorse. More funny stuff used to happen, less drama. People we're less focused on winning and more relaxed when things didn't go their way. Maybe its just the nostalgia glasses speaking, or the community changed.

No I distinctly remember it being an awlpike, and he was using the Vaegir Warmask together with Saranid Guard Armour.
No. He was running around in light armor/robes and a Pike (long spear) or sometimes spammed the GLA like mad. I know, i followed him around tons and then always cussed about how OP pikes were, when against him (i was a 2her then)
It was that phase of cRPG, when you had shieldwalls and formations and what not. But, well, when you had Jesus in your team, it was just like "Everyone follow Jesus!!!!111". Yeah, he is probably one of the most memorable chars in cRPG ever. (fanboy much? i guess.)

It was Sir_JohnApplebottom (if i remember the name correctly), that fought with a long awlpike, a rather cool guy as well.

Teehee, I started playing cRPG when there was only one EU server that reset every 30 minutes. I didn't play much or often those days though, was concentrating my time more on MMO's at that time. I'm not even sure I used the nick Vibe, probably not.

From those days I only remember these names:

Oberyn
Gnjus (Plate Armor + Crossbow :D)
Akincibegi

There was no retirement, generations, heirlooms, strategus, NA or clans back then.

Agreed with every word, it's as if it were my own. Also, forgot to add you too. One of my favourite Frenchmen!

Fu stop insulting me ! I'm not French !

Anyone remember Appe_The_Destroyer ?

Full Black armor + boulder on a stick hero. Good times indeed  :D

UGLYBASTARD, the guy I always tried to emulate. By the end, I was quite successfull at it.
Kesh, because being oneshotted across the whole map wasn't that bad anyway.
Village_Elder, because man he was awesome at throwing rocks and making babies.
Pululu was the high-PD archer unbeatable at firing timing. He didn't cared about his reticule because of the arrow angle "bug" (firing with perfect timing means your arrow goes straight no matter your reticule)
Stulle (I remember he was a member of wolves back then) was the polearm/archer guy. He used the LHSM and was very good with both.
Kunio and his turbocourser  :D
Around Xmas I "discovered" the looney tunes axe (good times beating high profile people in duel with it  ). One week later 3x more people were using it, one month later it was removed. Ty dev team, it was really imba  :) Do you remember that ?

One year... still, the first 2 weeks were the most memorable in terms of obsessive behaviour.

1 1/2 weeks and 142 hours played I bought my first gothic plate... :-)

24 hour grinds, 10 hours of strategus...a deserved lvl 45 char...
A cool community (which isnt as good anymore), no horses, the possibility to determine smbdys lvl by the gold and xp he added to the rounds pool...

Boy, I skipped everything to play...everything.

I know everybody mentioned in that list...many good players still play, many don't :-(

About the looney toons axe:

Imho Fallen_Giant  was the best user...and back paddel or jump and slash was absolutely valid...spend hours with him and Fallen_Warlord in TS.

Good times

Hell, even I played two weeks in November last year. Off course, I don't expect anyone would remember me, since I was a peasant that never got past level 15.

But one notion. I remember off course that at the time everyone was a tin can two hander with crossbow on their backs, arrows were one shooting all noobs such as myself until they got at least 2-3 points in shield (which in my case served only to get me close to the fight, where I would miserably die in about 5 seconds) and that I thought that the only type of horse available in mod was Plated Charger. However, and I know chadz will disagree, I think one thing was better at that time. Building up characters past lvl 30 allowed much more versatile builds. These days 90% of all classes are 21/18, 18/21 or 18/18.

Nice post Bjord, but man, how could you forget Muhammed? The stylish Muslim player, welcoming every1 by saying salam aleikum!

Indeed. He was one of my favorites, Muhammed ibn Abdullah, always leading the charge with his gigantic 2-handed sabre and in his orange outfit with a turban on his head. Somehow the ranged spam kept missing him (while other shieldless people around him kept dying), as if he had some kind of invisible aura shielding him.

My favorite No. 1 tho was Sir John Applebottom, owlpiker who later turned into a knight. Even tho i sucked at manual blocking i was never afraid of anyone but him.  :)

P.S. Oberyn, Olwen & I really didn't get along very well, we were always arguing & insulting each other until one day I said to Olwen: hey you frog-eating bastard, lets form a clan to show these scumbags how it's done properly (there were several clans running around already). The rest is history.
Also, of all 22nd members i think it's worth to mention Mad Jack McMad and his Mallet, together with Sir Ironlake (aka Blade57) the Rider.

P.P.S. Oh, and i just remembered one more guy, my favorite bundle of sticks of the Ol' days: Vodaz. Pre-historic version of Panos.

Nice videos, plenty of old faces some of whom still play too!, Back then my name was Murmillo_Prime I think... Something like that. I remember downhill charges on that same map being surrounded by people in all them equipments. xD

My second gen name was Murmillo_Seccondus or something, then someone pointed out I spelt Secundus wrong, I had planned on going up the whole name of number route until I thought about the prospect of getting past ten...

I don't care, away with your criticizing words! I choose to remain in my blissfully ignorant world, and you better keep out of it!

Heh. I was there. That build i told you wit the 4 weapons was my equip loadout while I could. Once weight started mattering I dropped to mail, and now use lamellar vests as armor. Heavy just slowly went out of usage for me. While riding and carrying a ranged weapon become more and more prominent.

My Old name was: Anders of Rose.(or Anders II of Rose.)

Ahhhh I miss the peasant wars, they were very refreshing. I went by Tomas_Traveller initially before changing to Tomas of Miles. It was possible with the slot system and the leveling to make decent jack of all trades hybrids back then, although I was too sucky to make good use of throwing, archery, and numerous melee weapons. I'm still a Noob For Life. I also couldn't use much of the highest tier stuff in most areas.

I like the ridiculous mention ****, lulz.

But yeah, sometimes I miss how completely dominant archers were on strategus and you would look for all the top archers for your battles. Where you knew all the top archers on sight from their face and hair and knew their playstyles, because it meant doing well or poorly depending on if you chose how you dodged and shot back.
In no particular order, just off the top of my head:

Qaki
TS_Robin_Longstride
pululu
Guard_Tenne
Druzhina_Nebun
Druzhina_ArcherKMC
Fallen_Loki
scor
Merlin666
Merc_cmpx (yes, he used to be a merc, would go 60-2 on sieges)
22nd_Baron_Tonixgut
Merc_Mustikki
Merc_Replica (replicunt another gen)
Chimp (hands down best archer in melee)

I remember Gnjus didn't even want to allow archers in the clan initially. Olwen and I finally talked him around, told him we'd try and recruit the best archers to our side so we wouldn't have to face them in Strat. That turned out allright XD. We tried to recruit chimp like a dozen times, but he was never interested in Strat. Pretty sure we tried pululu as well.

I remember that I was incredibly anti-Merc during my time in Shogunate. I tried to smear Merc's reputation as much as I could in Hungarian so that he wouldn't join. :D

Oh and thanks Kesh for reminding me about Merlin666, Tonixgut and ArcherKMC. Also, two more Druzhinas that I forgot about. Bigbay and RXN!

Ahhhh I miss the peasant wars, they were very refreshing. I went by Tomas_Traveller initially before changing to Tomas of Miles. Yeah those were awesome... I still remember when I threw a rock across the map and it landed in someone's face, I can't recall the name though. Incidentally, same thing happened to me once too.  :D

By the way, just a spontaneous idea I had! When I get my desktop back I was thinking about starting some sort of training project for anyone who wants to participate, no matter the clan. For two handers mainly, but anyone who is interested in melee would of course be most welcome. We could all decide for a day every week where we gather on a duel server, or maybe even ask some clan for permission to use their own servers.

Melee School, how does that sound?

I still think we could've done it without all that scum in our ranks.

If i managed to stand decently against the "drunken" Vincenzo (and we all know how "drunk" he was) then i recon a squad of able crossbowmen (with Jacko, Dave, etc) would be more then enough for any battle, even the Strategos ones. We could've compensated the lack of scumchers with throwers & crossbowers anytime, no matter how unrealistically OP they (archers) were (plate-armored sniping machine-guns & all that).

But obviously something had to be done after nearly everyone was walking around in full plate 24/7.

rofl i bought a greatsword first, then a sallet, then gothic plate and i refused to buy anything for my feet cos it would take that much longer to get the boots i wanted

archers used to shoot at my naked feet

i forget when i switched to flamberge

(click to show/hide)

speaking of black armour and boulder on stick - Where's Giant got to?? (Fallen_Giant)

Theres lots of other fallen players who i used to hang out with 24/7 when they were on like kingbread but.... they left me *cries* bwahahahha

edit: just read vmega's post - Giant used looney toons didnt he - i remember now

If I wasn't so disorganised and busy with Uni this year, I'd gladly train at a "melee school" in 1h. However if I had that time I'd probably be able to be on the duel server enough to get better.

Hate to shamelessly advertise, but the Mercs have been doing reasonably regular trainings for our new Merc-academy members.

One or two hours of training > weeks of playing experience. Burrik and Muffin and those guys know tricks i never picked up in my many, many hours of regular play.

Yah and i totally support that idea. Heck, if it gets going i bet a lot of mercs will participate also.

You need a good teacher though. Someone who does all the explaining and analyzing on teamspeak. Do a few excercises, like chamber practice or hilt-slash practice, then analyze what's going good and what isn't.

Also, private tutoring by the better players, like letting them watch you dueling and then getting private advice is gold.

Just read through all 10 pages of this because I love nostalgia...
To be honest with you, in the scheme of some of the players out there I haven't been playing as long as them, I remember joining with the 30 minute resets and I still to this day prefer the old EXP system over the current one. (But that may be the nostalgia talking since I still prefer CoD2 over EVERY other shooter since it was the first game I played online. 2,000 hours of that one, and i'm catching up with M&BW with something like 1,600 hours! ^^)

With regards to Bjord, you were the only person to ever make me rage-quit ANYTHING, if you can call being fed up of being continually insulted for no good reason of course. :P Although you have grown up a hell of a lot since you have "returned" to cRPG. (more or less just the forums it appears.)

I have to agree that pretty much everyone knew everyone, even the newer players were quickly known if they could show themselves having a little bit of a flair for the game but I do remember my first days being the darkest, I tried my hardest to copy Replica (no ironic comments here) in my first days (who as I remember was only running around with a very basic bow and light armour.), was kind of like my role model in the beginning, sadly no longer plays but I have caught a glimpse or two over the past two months of him being online, really need to get him back Mercs!!!

Down that route as well, the mallet swinging archers. I believe it was Connasse..? who was always hiding the EXP barn with a mallet, after he ran out of his 50 arrows, he'd start swinging it wildly at the door, I can always remember those moments, and of course I am sure everyone remembers their very first "epic kill streak" or "beating the odds". Mine was beating down 4 guys (including Sawa in his plated armour) in something about the same tier as pilgrim disguise with a mallet and nothing else all on my own, but that's bragging rights for my first ever "recognition on the servers" which was, to my great joy, from Replica!

Anyways, a good thread to have started.

P.S. Out of interest, how long as cRPG been running these days? I believe I am up to a year and a half or coming up to two years, something similar anyways.

Aww I miss Jesus, he could always pull a whole team together (or half most times) to actual team play hehe, this was before clans formed and I remember him as one of the better field commanders.

Who can forget the pike formations and shield walls of the old days ^^

Have to edit this. Yes Warband was released 30.3.2010.
So i have no idea what the chadz comment was about. Have to try dig it to see did i read the date wrong or something.
Ah yes i got it.  "duh" chadz comment was referring to Native community.
I should not type from memory, especially when talking about the other peoples comments.
My apologies to the donkey.

Side note: I would recommend reading from taleworlds forum, the topic: Native is Dying?
chadz defend/explains he's mod there, against people blaming cRPG (of all the bad in the world).
Intresting view's to the donkeys "psyche" and why cRPG saw the light of day, and maybe where it is heading.

And more suprising note, that means i was there at the "dawn".

Heh, I can remember having 1.127 but i'm not 100% sure that was my first version since I remember deleting a few before that, although that's not a dead cert since i've only just deleted version 1.127 off my computer because it was clogging up my "mods" folder :P

Ah well, i'm sure i'm not as old to this game as some people, I know I missed a full reset but caught the second one afaik or something like that anyways, I didn't play it much in the beginning, just as a time killer before I decided it was actually a very good mod.

Heh I think some of those are back when we had 1 server or just after ATS opened their servers up.
Also, notice the large majority of templars? Think about how long that was when templars were THAT large!

@TEnene: I had 2 folders one called CRPG and the other CRPG 1127. If I'm right, the CRPG was the original folder. Every new update was a deleting of the old folder/replace with new on like from CRPG to CRPG 1127. When I took the pics, CMP wasn't  a dev then.

yeh, just looked at release info for warband: Release   16.04.2009  (http://www.krawall.de/web/Mount_+_Blade_Warband/gameinfo/)
so yeh, crpg should be much older than june 2010.
also pretty sure i played before that, just didn't know how to take pics back then ^^
EDIT. probably alpha mod release...
hmmm... taleworld says something different, crap, me iz confused   :?

Lots of memories here!

I remember the first crazy times. It's a pity the old forums disappeared. Would be lots of fun reading the posts and discussions there.
I remember Ninja_ having close to 40 active members at some point.

Shoutout to Shinobi, the inventor of Ninja style! (Don't blame me, I'm just the PR guy!)
All other great players have already been mentioned.. perhaps except:

Lamenuit!
my first real char from before Ninjas:

POLLY_Thomek or Thomak.. (Yes, I was pwning with him, so I decided to go light and get a challenge and ninja came about. Initially I wanted all the best players to join me as a more viable alternative to staffmen. Nowadays mostly ignorant nubs and fools join us! why oh why! :)   (POLLY was a clan of me and a friend, POLLY_Tor)

Some guy took a pic right when I was about to kill him. This was the version where getting to lvl 31 was pratically impossible, only reason I went for it is people raged cause I could use the charger without having reqs for it, got called an exploiter a bunch, so I forced myself to grind so I could shove it in their faces. I remember someone used it to make a sig for me, don't remember who though :(.

I'm not in the list. In other words, this list should be discarded.

What I liked from back in the days before Strategus is how many clans allowed alt members.  When Braeden was a Templar I had an alt Ninja (who later joined the Shogunate) and a Bandit and all sorts of characters hanging out with other groups.  It was all very nice and friendly, because no one had anything to hide and also because there weren't enough people around anyhow.  Sure, there were people who hated one another and falling outs, but most rivalries were fun and sporting.

The drama is fun and all, but not when it is serious.

i don't see any reason for clans not to allow alt.. they should just have restricted permissions in forums and stuff, and maybe add an A to the clan tag or something

U mad?

And it's Phantom from Byzantium, not LLJK.

Also read the first post again, says nothing about the list being of favourites or people I appreciate. Hell, I put Gingerpussy and Gnjus on it and they were my mortal enemies back then.

Oh this brings back all the memories.  Formations, Gnjus the crossbowman,  armored Oberyn, only native content....*sighs* good old days. Back in those times I still remember there was some kind of martial ethos among players, that was great.

What an old sentimental whore I become.
