loginCattle die, and kinsmen die,
And so one dies oneself;
One thing I know that never dies:
The fame of a dead man's deeds.Varangian Anthem According to the Primary Chronicle of Rus, compiled in about 1113 AD, the Rus' people, a group of Swedish Vikings, had relocated from Uppland, Sweden, to Northeastern Europe, organizing an early politity centered around Ladoga and Novgorod under their leader Rurik, laying the foundation for the Rurik dynasty. Under the leadership of Oleg of Novgorod, a relative of Rurik, the Varangians expanded southwards by capturing Kiev, founding the medieval state of Rus'.
Engaging in trade, piracy and mercenary activities, Varangians roamed the river systems and portages of Gardariki, as Rus' lands were known in Norse sagas. They controlled the Volga trade route (Route from the Varangians to the Arabs), connecting Baltic to the Caspian Sea, and the Dnieper trade route (Route from the Varangians to the Greeks) leading to the Black Sea and Constantinople. Those were the critically important trade links at that time, connecting the Dark Age Europe with wealthy and developed Arab Caliphates and Byzantine Empire; via those routes most of the silver coinage came from the East to the West. Attracted by the riches of Constantinople, Rus' Varangians initiated a number of Rus'-Byzantine Wars, some of which resulted in advantageous trade treaties. At least from the early 10th century many Varangians served as mercenaries in the Byzantine Army, comprising the so-called Varangian Guard.

login Who we areWe're a new clan started by some old players. The Varangian theme is a nice variation on the more typical Viking one, and hopefully we'll be able to do something fun with it. As the history implies, we may play many different roles in this game. We're an international, English-speaking EU clan and our tag is VRN.
What we're aboutAll we really want is to play the game, have a good time, and have a nice group of people to do it with. While we've got some serious players on our side, individual skill isn't the main thing for us and we don't believe in having strict requirements in general. Our main focus is on teamwork, group spirit and coordination in battle. Members can play more competitively if they like, playing in friendly clan wars, forming teams for clan tournaments etc, but it's not mandatory. We expect members to be generally quite active, however, and also to take part in our Strategus faction.
Can I join?Anyone can apply, but we have a trial period for potential members. New players are welcome as long as they're active and eager to learn; we're confident that we'll be able to help them to improve after they're accepted. Players already in other cRPG clans will have to quit them before being accepted as applicants, and all applicants will be expected to remain exclusive to us as long as they're under consideration. Belonging to clans in native or other mods isn't an issue as long as you have time for cRPG.
If you want to apply, contact us, preferably in our IRC channel: #varangians @ QuakeNet. Promising applicants will be asked to wear our banner, spend time in the IRC channel and play together with the group. Those who continue to make a good impression during the trial period will be allowed to adopt the clan tag and become full members.
Recommended gearNord and Rus items. Some Middle Eastern influence allowed, e.g. lamellar gauntlets, Sarranid weapons, etc. The dress code isn't overly strict, but we do encourage everyone to mostly keep to the theme, so preferably no samurai or knights in plate.

Sea RaidersWhere to find usAside from this thread, your best bet for contacting us is the #varangians IRC channel on the QuakeNet network. All members are strongly urged to get themselves proper IRC clients and to idle in the channel whenever they're online. People who have business with the clan are also welcome to visit, but no spies allowed, so leave after you're done. As a rule it's members and applicants only.
