dont know if somoene already posted it but that here worked for me and some other guys:
1. first make a backup of your current warband.exe.
2. download this file http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J398VTMB
3. paste and overwrite it over your "new" warband exe.
4. start the game and dont take care about the launcher which sais u still have the new version.
then join a server hope it helps u cheers ;D

Required Download of Old Warband (Read everything carefully)

Steam users download

then install it, use your Steam key to activate it, then copy the cRPG folder from your original Steam and paste it in the new Module folder of the new Warband, then start Warband from the start menu link (Start\Mount&Blade Warband\Mount&Blade Warband), not from Steam.


Also, DO NOT INSTALL OVER THE STEAM INSTALLATION.

EDIT: DO NOT PUT THE NEW FILES INTO YOUR STEAM FOLDER. No where in the instructions above does it say this, and so far 7 people have pmed me about this. If you do this, then it starts babbling about wanting a CD key. You need to download it in a separate place, Program files, and then launch it from it's own launcher and not steam. When I did this, it never asked for a CD key.

How to turn off auto-update for Steam

wont fix it if you updated, but will prevent it in future and for other games (have to do them individually)

Goto Steam 'Library'
right click M&B > properties
Update tab
drop down > do not automatically update this game

Remember that you also need the latest version of cRPG to play.

This will always have the download link of latest full version. Mirrors are often faster than the poor overloaded MBRepository.

I'm posting it everywhere.
I didn't download anything you guys mentioned, instead:

I changed this line
compatible_with_warband = 1223
to this
compatible_module_version = 1223

in the second line of module.ini in the cRPG folder.
It works!
(No hacking with steam, I only did this change after I couldn't start the game)
