a 2 sided axe would not be unbalanced, duh.

its got its own counterweight built in, you can redirect the direction with a backswing

unbalanced means too heavy to cancel the hit

2 sided axes were only ceremonial or used for wood cutting. Double sided axes were used for chopping trees down because the added head weight helped drive it in accompanied by the fact that when one side went dull, you just started hitting it with the other side. Saved time on heading back to villages to get the sharpened or possibly even peened.

No double sided axes were used in war. They are very clumsy and you are likely to injure yourself and comrades around you with backswings. Battle axe heads are relatively small and single sided.
It is a lot easier to chop a man down than a tree.
Having a point on the other side of an axe for piercing armor however was used in war.

That's not entirely true, but the general point is.

Doubles-edged axes weren't used in war.
Oh, wait, maybe by lumberjacks on the uprising?

But yeah.

But we've all seen peasants using scythes and knives to defend themselves, and they appeared in cRPG, as well. Why not have this double sided axe be an addition to the lower tier 2H weapons (Cheap and Heavy Dmg, but Slow and Short)?

That could work.

It might be a bit weird seeing tincans running about with them for the laughs, but yeah.
Lumberjacks might have used them to defend themselves at times.

Lumberjacks are peasants.
Peasants always use anything they can get their hands on to defend themselves.

Yeah. Makes sense.
Still, they really -would- have to be slow and low-tier.

Totally plausible. But it would not look like the one pictured, and would be something along the lines of "double-bitted Wood axe". Because there aren't double sided battle axes and would be god awful at battle. They would have no thrust as well. But yeah; A heavy, Unbalanced, slow but rather hard hitting axe that is cheap? I can see that.

actually the Parashu of India was a double sided axe used for war(it also came with a spike for thrusting, and came in single sided mode as well)

Woodsmen were called into war as well in the middle ages(read about lithuania vs teutonic knights sometimes) and they would be forced to use whatever they had available(which could be yes 2handed double sided axes)

Same with anyone classified as a viking, arms procurement was much less streamlined back in the day, don't think for a second everyone had the exact same weapon at all, hell even in the 1800's the position of Colonel was basically the guy who armed everyone, so every other Colonel had different arms/calibers generally until later

I imagine viking raiders were armed with a variety of one handed/2 handed axes, 2 handed truncheons/mauls(think studded war club/mallets), rarely any swords till much later

it seems like everyone thinks the dark and middle ages were a time of great national unity and organization, they weren't at all, the most civilized nation with the most central procurement process was the Byzantine Empire(Remnants of the Roman Empire) who were famous for 2handed axe use and loved Double sided axes as a symbol of power, I don't doubt some Varangian guards 2hand axe's may have been of the double sided variety especially if they were guarding the emperor (more for status than for use)

Also, cRPG isnt so much about realism, but more about arcade stats and %HP.
I think it could give a cool status for the one that would use it (Troll slayer FTW, i even made the hair)

No, lets not turn cRPG into some gay anime fest. Keep it real.
