That's the whole problem, that it's impossible to test.

Use a slow shield like steel/plate covered then try a fast one like knightly heater, you will notice the slow ones get you killed alot because you cant bring them up in time, especially if you are tap blocking.

Speed of the shield determines your type of playstyle.  Do you quickly counter attack using a fast shield or turtle up and wait for enemy to make a mistake and start 1h spamming them.

Also I wouldnt recommend using a slow weapon with a slow shield, it leaves you too open for counterattacks.

Honestly never had a problem bringing a shield up fast enough even with a heavy board shield. My testing before the last patch had them all coming up in exactly the same amount of time.

just like the other posters said, even if you looks 'up' doesnt mean its going to block.

try out a steel shield and get back to us

When I was still pole a lot of my attacks just went through the enemy shield. IIRC mostly on slower shields.

Yes, speed rating affects how soon a raised shield can block melee hits.

Easy test: set a shield speed rating to 1, watch how melee hits go straight through it even if it looks fully raised.

When I was using a huscarl, I was getting annoyed of getting hit, especially when attempting to twitch block.

It may only be a few frames faster, but the high speed shields are somewhat noticeable for me.

So if I get this right, the animation to bring up the block looks identical, but whether it's actually blocking or not is determined by the shield speed?

Anyway, even with a fast shield i still have a lot of "what the hell i have blocked this" moments.

Finally a good answer on this. I'm guessing that like weapon speed, the difference in shield speed is just milliseconds. So, in practice the difference shouldn't be that noticeable especially with a decent shield skill.

Shield speed affects the "raising the shield" animation speed. That's a fact.

Don't know if it comes into account on the formulas regarding the speed of recovery from shield stun (which weight and height() are know for actually affecting it).

Cheers.

It doesn't affect the animation speed. However, it DOES affect the amount of time needed after you hit the block button to actually block. See above.

So, a 100 speed shield blocks pretty much instantaneously even if it isn't actually up. Slower shields may not block even IF they are all the way up.

Just tested it by modifying the shield speed values. I was pretty excited to finally have an answer on this.

If shield and weapon speeds are the same, does one feint as fast as without shield?

Having a shield or not has no effect on feinting whatsoever since you're not actually blocking when you feint. If you notice, your shield also moves faster when your weapon is raised. It again doesn't have any blocking effect, I think it's just to smooth out the animations.

So, whenever you begin to "attack" you automatically go into the attack animation and your shield instantly drops. So, with or without a shield you feint at the same speed.

I know shield speed affects how fast you raise the shield (and are "covered" when you raise the shield).

Does it also effect how fast your melee weapon swings when you have the shield equipped in your off hand?  I was told it does, but nobody has addressed that in this thread.

I don't think so. There are even vids somewhere  that show that shields don't affect swing speed in general.
