Build Discussion

So here I was thinking of various builds as I get closer to 31 and being able to retire, and I noticed there is not dedicated build discussion thread.

To make things easy to plan and check you should use http://infinitum.dyndns.org/crpg/calc.htm

I'll start by going over my thoughts for my next build.
I intend to heirloom my Nodachi again, making it balanced.

Initially I was going to go for a balanced build along the lines of 18 STR / 21 AGI but then I realised it sucks only having my 2h and nothing else (particularly since I don't use a shield ... EVER ! , thus making the early (half) part of the game, more like dodgeball with arrows, bolts and throwing axes).

So I figured, if you can't fight them, join them right ?

So I came up with this:

Quote
Level 30 (4508158 xp)

Hit points: 47
Strength: 12
Agility: 27

Converted: 8

Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 4
Shield: 0
Athletics: 6
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 4
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 9

One Handed: 1
Two Handed: 153
Polearm: 1
Archery: 127
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: 1

Note: WPF numbers are not accurate, but should be around where I would expect to get them.

What do you think ?
Would this work ?
How accurate would I be with a Khergit bow, PD 4 and ~120 bow WPF ?
Would 47 hp and using light-ish armor make me too fragile in general ? (not so much to spamberges but to bolts and arrows).

I can tell you from experience that you wont get too much damage from the bow but it will be fairly accurate..

I have something too for the hybrid department:

Level 29 (   3728060 exp)
Strength   17
Agility   18
Skill Points   1 (saving it for levelup)

Converted: 2

One Handed   125
Two Handed   1
Polearm   1
Archery   1
Crossbow   1
Throwing   109

Ironflesh   0
Power Strike   5
Shield   5
Athletics   6
Riding   0
Horse Archery   0
Power Draw   0
Power Throw   5
Weapon master    6

As you can see, I managed to build a 18/18 character with only one point conversion until level 30, and STILL maxing out all of the needed skills for 1h+shield/thrower hybrid (except shield, which I prefer at 5 - the huscarl rarely breaks anyway). When I level up, I'll have the 18th point in str, leveling up PT and PS with the new and the leftover skillpoint. WPF is not really high I know, but that's pretty much the only compromise I had to endure.

There are a lot of different 2h player... from ninja to tin can knight. I would prefer more str and powerstrike.
The archery damage will be not very high(dunno whether the pd penalty still works the same way as before patch, but if i would suggest not more than 6 pd).

You can fight against the archer and the thrower as archer. But if you want to go into melee (you are 2h) you cannot do anything against the thrower without shield.

What about throwing? Works quite well in closer combat... as you probably know as victim...

2h and throwing together works quite well. Imho 2h is an secondary skill if you are an archer.

I still don't have a very clear picture of how WPF affects weapon performance.
Is the increase linear ? (+x% per point)
Is it exponential (like the WPP cost) ?

If the performance increase is linear, while the costs are exponential, I probably don't need to go as far as WPM 9.

go pure 2h or a 2h/throwing hybryd. I went archery/2h hybryd one time and sucked at both, meaning pure archers owned me 1on1 and spammers were just too fast. Now i got pure 2h and its much better. Throwing after patch got awsome compared to anything else so I would go with that 4 ranged combat.

Here's a nice thrower build to discuss:

Level 30 (4508158 xp)

Hit points: 74
Strength: 33
Agility: 3

Converted: 2

Ironflesh: 3
Power Strike: 11
Shield: 0
Athletics: 1
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 11
Weapon Master: 1

One Handed: 1
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 1
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: ~100

Optionally, I could wait for level 31 to max out PS and PT to get this:

Hit points: 80
Strength: 33
Agility: 3

Converted: 0

Ironflesh: 6
Power Strike: 11
Shield: 0
Athletics: 1
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 11
Weapon Master: 1

One Handed: 1
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 1
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: ~100

Weapon of choice:
Balanced Heavy Throwing Axes

The problem is even if you are number 1 in NA you are still only number 467 in EU or the worst in AUS(number 17)

a little bit ot now, but i think all str is no longer needed... much less tincans. Also you have a lot of powerstrike... so it is not a pure thrower, but you want to be able to pick up a weapon and do some damage (unfortunately very slow and normally not much armor).

I test a thrower with 12 agi, rest str and not full powerstrik atm... so far it works quite well. lot of kills and fast.

The high PT isn't for the damage, but for the accuracy.

Funny thing about this build is that I can wear full plate+4 stacks of throwing axes. When I deplete a stack of axes I can pick up a barmace and start overheading people. I'm just 1 or 2 points in PS lower than the Full strength/IF builds. The only difference is that they can take more punishment before going down, but I make up for that in ranged capability. I don't have plate yet, but not a lot of people expect someone in low tier armour to crush through their block with a barmace.

A thrower without pure strength would be best in a hybrid build, as it would only get you a bit more WM and make you a bit quicker on your feet if you stay thrower.

I would recommend Gnjus's build for that. You could use a throwing axe in melee or just pick up something from the battlefield.

by using a shield for say 2 skill points, it would be better for your char wouldnt it, unless you really want to be a hybrid

Either no shield or a good shield imo :P

I don't want to sacrifice a stack of throwing weapons for a shield only to have it broken by a few arrows or a hit or 2 from a 2h.

You are right... accuracy is better with high PT. Before Patch i had PT 10, atm 7.

A thrower without pure strength would be best in a hybrid build, as it would only get you a bit more WM and make you a bit quicker on your feet if you stay thrower.
I have throwing and 1h skilled. Normally i use my last heavy axe in melee... in case of emergency. Damage is ok, but the length is a problem. Tried the lances, but to be honest I am not good in thrusting and the swing damage is bad.

A balanced build like Gnjus should work well.
