I love war movies as well and Das Boot is one of the best and worth mentioning twice (fixed the English title for the other film, book is better though).

Attack! (Aldrich)

Ran (Kurusawa) is just epic (all Kurusawa films are worth watching: myth has it that 'Starwars: A New Hope' was based in part on Kurusawa's Hidden Fortress.

Two modern Chinese movies are definitely watchable:

The battle of Red Cliff (Woo)

The Three Kingdoms (Daniel Lee)

Some dramas:

Farewell my concubine (Chen Kiage)

Raise the red lantern (Zhang Yimou)

The Decalogue (Krzysztof Kieslowski) TV miniseries with 10 films, two became full length " A short film about killing" and "A short film about love"

Sci-Fi

Solaris (Andrey Tarkovskiy), not the American remake

They r really nice films, +1.  btw 你是中国人吗?

also dont forget the Jackie Chan films ^^

The Tuxedo

New Police Story

Around the World in 80 Days

The Myth

Doesn't the Chinese like to make HD movies, or is it just most Downloads/Torrents that are bad?  i.e All torrents I find of Three kingdoms, The Lost bladesman, etcetera are all in a low resolution.
Just wondering if it's the Chinese themselves or the uploader/subber.

yea i had some problems like this too. Chinese films are not very popular in general so there r less good quality films available on those sites. I managed to find a few good one on piratebay but i am not allowed to post any piratebay links here :(

the best advice i can give u is to find the one with the most seeder/leecher :D gl

Ty fixed ;). The book is awesome but the films are well made too, especially the first ('30).
Also it's the first antimilitaristic german movie just before the rise of the chocolate chip cookies (that permabanned it). Also not many ww1 movies around

There is of course Laurence of Arabia (Lean) and Gallipoli (Weir), the latter starring Mel Gibson.

Also there was a movie about einstein as a soldier in WWI, if I'm correct.

I'd like to throw in, if you're at all into martial arts/fight movies, Ip Man was great!
You think you're pretty smart with your dago mustache and your greasy hair.

einstein: The Rise of Evil?

Yes, that one!

The movie was bad, also the title is funny. But I remembered the WWI part because it's unlikely to see such in movies nowadays.

All Quiet in the Western Front is a good war film (1979, about WWI)

Blackhawk Down is another one that was good

The Hurt Locker was another good war film

Saving Private Ryan was amazing

Gran Torino is one of my favorite movies of all time
On a similar note, it is imperative to carry smoke bombs. Archers get confused because they're so ineffective that they pause to wonder why, so they end up being as effective as intended.

yeah more like a docufiction then a movie, but interesting if you are into those kind of tv shows. Also who played einstein was a pretty cool actor

A really good docufiction with awesome and historically accurate battles is also Hannibal: Rome's worst nightmare.
The cannae battle in that movie is one of the most accurate and brutal depiction of an ancient battle ever.
Also i liked that for once the romans aren't depicted with that lame lorica segmentata and late helmet and late army organization, but have the real early republican stuff (bronze little breastplate or no armour at all, and montefortino helmet) and quite bad tactics relying only on sheer numbers and choesion.

Also there is Ancient Rome The Rise and Fall of An Empire that have good battle historical accuracy but with good actors and some action. Don't watch the usa version, it's just a documentary with standard lorica segmentata battle scenes on the background for every battle.
Watch the uk (bbc)  version it's more like a movie and also much more accurate
