Not sure where the break-even point is, and I guess it will vary slightly from person to person. I know I can still make a pretty good profit at around 40k, though.
Don't.

For first 20 or 24 levels use nearly nothing (gambeson + longsword f.e.) until you have made 50k. Do not spend those, they are your buffer. Then use 35-50k and see how much you gain/loose over many rounds.

40-50k is where I break even if I remember correctly.  For the past while I've been using a 14k build though so it could've been tweaked since I straddled the line.

At around 40k for me as well.

I would direct you to Walt's great thread: http://forum.c-rpg.net/index.php/topic,2394.msg40317.html

Basically, use this formula:
average equipment cost = 50 gold * (average multiplier)/0.0027

Input your average multiplier to find out roughly how much your equipment can cost and still break even. For a player who wins at a constant 50% probability each round, your average multiplier will converge upon ~1.9375, giving a break even equipment cost of ~35860 gold. If you win more than 50% you can maintain higher costing equipment, and conversely, if you win less than 50% you will break even at a lower equipment cost.

Break chance is 4% and repair cost is 5%. That means every 25 ticks you break everything, which costs five percent of your equipment value.

In 25 ticks you make 1250 gold. multiply that by 20 to get value of armor and you get 25,000 gold.

So 25,000 gold per multiplier is the amount to sustain your equipment. You will have to decide what your average multiplier is. It is probably around x2. So about 50,000 will break even.

Yeah, i find that I'm still profitable up to about 40k, which means I'm wearing my Plate or Corrazina armor.

I have completed a new study on this topic. Most importantly, the rate of item breakage is now the advertised 4% per clock tick so you can afforded 25000 gold times your average multiplier. The majority of players will have an average multiplier of about 2x and will have a stable amount of gold if they wear about 50000 gold worth of equipment.
