Excuse me but its pretty big and damn expensive gateway instrument, my parents have forced me to play piano for decades and I hated it. Real gateway and the even more disgusting instrument is recorder flute. Parents who hate their kids should buy them a recorder flute or simply buy them a cello and watch them slowly die on Johann Pachelbel Canon in D thats even more sinister than recorder flute.

The "expense" of our last 2 pianos was the effort of moving them out of someones garage.  They gave them away free, they just wanted the space.

You don't have to own a piano. And don't even act like there aren't expensive guitars. Buy the girl a cheap keyboard from a pawn shop. She's 8. It's just a matter of learning to play at this point. Besides, if you pick up a nice cheap one she can spray it pink and glittery with cute stickers and it won't crush your heart when she wants a new one before she's 13 
That's what any proper 8 year old girl would do to any instrument you give her.
I was quite fond of this book of My Little Pony stickers I got in my Christmas stocking one year. They ended up on everything.

lol, this convo has gone all over the place.  Anyways, my kiddo has a korg keyboard, an ibanez acoustic/electric guitar and an ibanez acoustic/electric bass.  Sadly like most people she says she wants to learn to play but doesn't have even a smidgeon of discipline to sit down and learn.  Can't fault her though, seems pretty common to have this idea that you should be able to just put an instrument in your hands and be composing great music after an hour; and if it takes longer then it's boring.   

I think the first time she rolled her eyes at me was when I tried to show her the very beginning of learning:  C-Major scale.  Ah well, maybe as she gets older.  Ideally I'd like her to be a drummer.

At that age I would say you should be your kid's BFF

My parents forced musical lessons on me until 12. It didn't seem to work. o.O

I think you're doing it right, not that I have any informed opinion on raising kids.
