The best way to learn karate is to find a large glass window, get a sponge and bucket of soapy water. Take a sponge in your hand, submerge it into the soapy water, and press on the window surface. Try to cover the entire window multiple times doing circular motions with a sponge. The goal is to turn the window into a perfectly shiny and reflective surface. During the course, you will hear a lot of squeaky sounds, which means you are progressing in the right direction. When you are done with the first window, do another, and another. After dozen or so windows when your skills are honed to a decent level try doing next window while standing on just one foot. After thousands of windows on one foot try standing on a single toe. First, stand on the toe then try doing the same while standing on a single finger. After a million windows doing that you should try levitating. If you succeed, congratulations, you have become a master of karate.

The second more common way is to join a local dojo, they will instruct you and you will be assigned to a group according to your skill level. At first, you will perform a basic move (called Kihon) forward punch (oi zuki) and will do that until your arms drop off or you get good enough with it. Then you will practice other kihon. After that comes kata or form where you learn to combine those moves. There are also different styles of karate but that comes later.

Problem with second, more common approach is that you will punching air all the time and no window will get washed during the process.

Traditional martial arts is a scam for nerds who can't fight just like how pickup artists are a scam for nerds who can't get laid. If someone is trying to physically assault you for whatever reason your best bet to win is to go to the fucking gym and hopefully be bigger than your opponent, even then if you get jumped and lose your balance you are probably fucked.

You think some 181cm D&D master taking the "leaping tiger stance" is going to win against a 2 meter neanderthal terminator with arms the sizes of treetrunks? Yeah dude just "be like water" and grab his wrist while lunging him 10 meters up in the air, just like in those kung-fu movies.
Honestly though, if you plan on learning gay shit like judo or karate to better your fighting skills a more worthwhile investment would be to buy your girlfriend a strap-on and letting her pound your ass till you cry for mercy, because that pain is what you would experience on the streets.

HOLY SHIT AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH. What episode of naruto did you learn this from? Are you going to tell him how to motion the water in water balloons so he can learn the secrets of the rasengan.

BJJ/Wrestling>Muay Thai/Kickboxing>Judo>Boxing

anything else is crap and a waste of time and money

ninjedit: good wrestling clubs can be hard to come by, especially if you're out of college+outside of USA/Eastern Europe, but if you can find a good club trust me it's the best foundation for any kind of fighting. Ask anyone who trains they'll tell you they wished they wrestled in HS. If you can't get that experience, find a BJJ school. Find somewhere that competes and has a legit instructor, don't go to some chain bullshit garbage. Find a place that spars at least 30+ mins per class+ has open mats, thats when you learn the most. BJJ can be nasty and yeah it's full of uncomfortable positions but when it comes to defending yourself it's one of the best. Sambo is also amazing and I'm blessed to train under a Master of Sport but depending on location it can be really difficult to find instructors for that. Judo is legit but you have to be careful where you go - there's a ton of ex olympian/national champion Judokas who have gyms. Shouldn't be hard to find one.

Basically; Grapple. Compliment it with striking. Spar. Spar. Spar. Have a good attitude and get ready to spend years being humbled. You won't regret it.

I reckon wrestling is only good in a 1v1 but I might have the wrong conception of it. Anything which teaches you the confidence to quickly take someone down seems the best since you'll probably go up against several people. Bugnir overrating size by exaggerating the amount of +2 meter meatheads walking around trying to rape you. Some 1,60m girl in northern sweden fought off 3 babbar last week. She learnt how to box by her father and grandfather.

Boxing is great, and it works in 1v2x situations... if they are smaller than you/incapable of grabbing you. I've sparred boxers/kickboxers before. Shoot a lazy single and they're on their ass for 5 minutes.
In general, measuring a martial art by "how many people can I take on at once" is a horrible metric, because if you're outnumbered your best bet is to run/scream get help. Especially if you're a small girl. I mean fuck, if someone has a knife or a gun and you try to fight them at all you're gonna get fucked up.

If he's looking for the best martial art for self defense, the only practical situation to applying that is in 1v1 scenarios. Where again I'll go back to my point that Wrestling/BJJ is the best foundation, especially when complimented with Muay Thai (or Dutch Kickboxing)

Martial arts are not always practiced in order to learn self-protection. It is a sport and recreation activity.

If you want to protect yourself, get a gun. Or at least carry a hidden knife.

polearm is best weapon, you can carry it everywhere while wearing a robe and no one will suscept anything, they will just thimnk you're an old man. alternatively you can carry nunchaku in your sleeves, it's conveniet because the chains bend at your elbows. if you live on exotic beach where people don't wear clothes, carry a deck of razor edged cards between your ass cheeks or strapped to your thigh, under shorts - good ranged weapon. for melee, kick sand in their eyes.
