The universe is the free will - it is the original thought. I am the universe, and so are you. But our humans are only vessels to our soul. It is not wrong to think the world is a simulation, but more precisely it is imagination of god. If god was omnipotent and omniscient, the only way he could entertain himself is by creating independent free will - one that he can not control and predict. So enjoy your shitty life, wageslave, for in a way, you asked for it.
