Its that time again. When capitalists and commies aren't waging war in some shithole its either flu or some global warming catastrophe thing. This January we dedicated to flu. We will see if this one has the potential to come close to legendary Spanish cousin. Last attempts were pathetic.

Meh. This is just a slightly worse flu. Kills the same people that completely ordinary flu kills.

Same thoughts. But they seem to pinpoint the fact how it has a second mutation which will spread much faster than the current version of the virus. Atm there seems to be anywhere between 2000 and 90000 infected, which to me is super low considering how tightly packed with people Chinese cities are. Flu epidemic in my country usually means every tenth citizen gets infected in just one week and that's around half a million people. Every major city in China has double the population of entire Serbia. Those numbers are a joke.

For some sense of scale. Panicking over a couple dozen dead is pretty hilarious, frankly. It's solely because of the media, and people having no idea how many the ordinary, no-one-fears-it flu kills every year. Especially when they've said this Corona virus thing only kills people with compromised immune systems, just like the flu.

Technically that is incorrect. Strains of flu and AIDS kill people in the same way. People with compromised immune system either die directly from pneumonia or effects pneumonia has on the human body, like heart having to work overtime when breathing apparatus is failing, which ultimately leads to heart attack or stroke. Flu or bacteriological diseases don't do shit on their own but they do force our body to bombard our own cells, killing parts of ourselves in the process. Even the famous brain-eating amoeba cant eat the entirety of our brains, we die because our body orders firebombing on our brain which kills us.

If we ever manage to produce tiny enough robots (so called nanobots) capable of traversing blood canals, we will cure most if not all diseases because many of them are work of some sort of external, tiny parasite.

You shouldn't trust official chinese numbers, it's less the "facts" but more how the whole state reacts to it. The overall fright is not its lethality, but more how easily it is spread, it's more about the fear of it mutating or combining/adapting with another virus. And even if it doesn't turn out as badly as people thought: nice anyways, its a good practice for state/science/etc once there is a more critival virus around and less dead people is (almost) always a good thing. Im already surprised how willingly people went to the hospital to get checked, I thought they'd give less of a fuck

The biggest problem with nanobots is something we will experience in Cyberpunk, economical dependency. Once we start replacing our natural immune system mechanisms with external man-made cure-all thingies, we are fucked. In the same way, people taking insulin are fucked. Because those will cost money and when we stop paying, taking them, we die. Scenario already covered in many works of sci-fi literature.

The closer to the sci-fi future we get, the closer we are to the dystopian world depicted in those sci-fi stories. Which is why is important that the next revolution happens in the United States. If they become socialists with everything that goes with it (something many EU citizens take for granted), maybe we all will have a brighter future ahead of us.

I for one welcome the future of nanobot cyber dependency.  When we replace our weak carbon based brains with silicone based brains we will be able to think with 3rd state energy levels instead of our current 2nd state like the chimps we are.
