https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/10/turkeys-economic-crisis-deepens-as-trump-doubles-tariffs

Turkish Lira plunged 20% or so as Trump hit an already weak Turkey with massive steel and aluminum tarrifs. Inflation is over 15% to add to the bad news. It is also to note that several of the Turkish banks have a lot of their shares owned by European ones, so what follows might be quite interesting to watch.

Stay safe turkish dudes, stockpile food and medicine as soon as possible, and if it was your intention, try to get yourself ready to leave.

Basically, Erdogan, the leader of turkey, recently got a lot of new powers that allow him to do pretty much anything he wants. He purged all the public sector + army from the secular/left-wing/pro-kurd opposition, and recently named his son in law (I think) as finance minister. He stands for an Islamist Turkey in short, and it comes back to bite him in the ass. Investors are pulling out, and so here we are, perhaps witnessing the fall of the first domino that will provoke a crash when you also take in account global growth has been slowing down, and the US trade war that just begun.

I wonder if an economic crash can unseat him or will Turkey become another -stan country?

If anything the fucked economy will unite his followers more, the more fucked they are the closer they are for some reason. His son in law being finance minister seems like a big deal to outsiders but we are used to shit like this tbh, he used to be the minister of energy and resources. I don't believe the economy will crash harder than expected, because the state isn't in a huge debt atm, but many companies are, so a downsize in economy and many companies bankrupting will follow, I am no expert though, assuming from what I've read so far.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/13/turkey-financial-crisis-lira-plunges-again-amid-contagion-fears

Now, after a 8.7% fall within a weekend if I read it correctly, it's quite clear that Turkey is fucked. The real question is how much, as well as how widespread are the repercussions for the EU banks.
