GMG didn't fund the project, there was an investor, but they were in charge of marketing and like you said, they had control over the Steam page.

btw, I don't have the inside info about it, but a few months ago the page of GMG directors change quite a lot (here and here). Around the same time, the guy who worked on OKAM from GMG also wrote this:

Ok thanks for correcting that bit. It's been a long time and I wasn't that much involved in it so my memory on this isn't completely accurate. My only thoughts are that Donkey Crew did nothing wrong

All the money they got from steam spent on OKAM's development since no one works for free and developing a game can be pretty expensive.

You asked about Steam money - Steam money came in later after they have already sold the ownership of the project.
