Heavy round shield is the only one really worth using (lots of tank, very wide so abuses forcefield, can't get shot in the feet with 4+ shield skill). Takes an absolutely incredible number of arrows to break that shield with 5 shield skill
Medium armour (the middle of the shop in every item), gives you lots of movement, tank and WPF
Carry a spear to fend off cav while you're chasing archers
Yep, my current build has been pretty effective against the archers

However my best anit-ranged build has to be my lvl 37 build, I could block forever and run faster than the ranged, so groups of them couldn't surround me easily + very high wpf meant easier kills.

You can still get shot to shit if unaccustomed to this type of build, requires patience and well timed strikes when killing multiple ranged,
I prefer knightly kite with this build, light weight but still very good stats, you want to be able to move quickly, so light armor like mail shirt with fur is best.
Just imagine 5 guys with this build doing co-ordinated strikes on those pesky ranged!
Edit, you can also use that same build for a dagger hero
