and didnt set ranks for mercenary in manage menu

Rank 0 makes gear avaliable to everyone. Use other ranks to hide stuff ( like donkeys, you don't want them being wasted during battle )

so looks like you did not have eq at all only goods
the attacker side does not receive the peasant equipment, only the defending but only if they have nothing and they had horses i think
