I haven't played Medieval 2 but I played a shit ton of Medieval 1. That was really good, nothing like losing half your crusade force to deceases before they reach the middle east.

Medieval 2 has that utter BS spy opening games shit though.

I'm gonna recommend either Shogun 2, Rome 2 (cos it actually works now). I also quite liked Empire as well.

Med 2 + Kingdoms is one of my all time favourites for sure, Broken Crescent mod is awesome, high quality mod with a fantastic setting. Third Age Total War is also fantastic quality and a must for anyone that likes The Lord of the Rings. Stainless Steel is pretty good for the vast size although IMO it also lacked in focus and detail because of that, still a good mod. Call of Warhammer is good but I found it to always be unstable and buggy, relying on too many scripts and scripted events to make things work, but if you like or have ever liked Warhammer at all you will have fun with this one.

That being said, they are all honestly good now, they all have good parts and the choice of eras is nice. They fixed Rome 2 and I also really enjoyed Attila, they're both quite different from the other games in the way things like army recruitment is handled, but I liked that. They're also the newest and look awesome, after having played the life out of the older games I tired of them and only really play Rome 2, Shogun 2 or Attila now when I want some TW fun.

Last of all, I can't believe you've never tried a TW game, hope you enjoy!.

I'm pretty sure anyone saying MTWII hasn't played MTWI. MTWII has some great mods, but I still think the engine is clunky (also compared to RTWI which have even better mods) and the campaign is a downgrade from the first.

But I still think RTWII:EE, NTW (Napoleonic wars) and Attila with Charlemagne are the best TW campaigns. Shogun II if you like Medieval Japan. They are all improvements over earlier games in the series.
For anyone new to the series I'd say start with Rome II Emperor Edition, it's the most impressive in scope and with a modern engine, and it got fixed up good in the last few patches. Or if you want a Medieval setting go for the most recent campaign DLC for Attila.

I played plenty of MTW1, while it was great, MTW2 once patched/fixed was good + visually a lot nicer, but the mods made it more than great, never had any desire to play MTW1 since.

I hate the addition of hitpoints in R2:TW, i think the game was perfectly fine with all non-special/super-elite units having just one hitpoint (and a lot more defense), made flanking fire/attacks a lot more rewarding and units were tough from the front.

I think hitpoints were already a thing in Shogun 2

What I hate on Rome2, Shogun2 is constant raising traits of Generals and Agents.
After a while it gets boring and frustrating specially with bigger empire.
Why it could not be as in Medieval2 or Rome, automatic.
If your general is not used and sits in city with nice brothel of course he will not become highly skilled killing machine but cheerful drunkard.
He get some new traits which could be negative in combat but could be on other hand very good for city, province management.
But in Rome2 constant clicking and level increasing, which stupidly prolongs slow pace of game.
Even general totally used for battle could increase his level in city/province management.
But as I said more generals and agents more frustration.

I remember that game, it was very fun, but the difficulty was pretty high at some point

They've also made an RTWII version that also never got a campaign, most of their resources for unit skins come from M&B modders like Dejawolf, Rahtos and Counterpoint etc. It's a shame but I don't we should count on ever having a real campaign.
