Most of early access are launched during alpha.

Early access mean for sale so I suppose that everyone who buy the game in early access and also the early backer can have acces to the alpha.

If you are sceptical about releasing on Steam, just look at the sales of Squad, pretty much the same story as you guys. From mod to game. The servers are full 24/7 and they are 40 player servers on average. And even, if someone sees it, but doesn't buy the game, he can tell a friend, who will.

I agree, I played Project Reality (the mod) and I'll definitely buy Squad. Now, people who haven't even heard of the mod are playing because of Steam.
