Killed flowee, he said I had it in me then the game basically froze. I quit and re-opened it and that got me to the last save point. I reset and spared Toriel this time. Didn't see flowee at all.

so who did you kill and who did you spare on your first run? the game easily baits you into killing toriel at first, it made many think that you must weaken her to prove yourself.. then a 300 crit happens and she dies.

btw if you reload after killing goat mom and spare her, this happens

this fucking game got me with this the first time, I wanted to make things right and got called out for it. genius
there is also a variation of this dialog if you kill the random monster encounters but not toriel, flowey says that just because they are not 'bosses', they are someone else's toriel, and calls you a brat.

If there are as many combinations of stuff that can happen or not happen as what I think there are, this game has way more endings than The Stanley Parable.

btw what you just experienced was a neutral run. try beating the game without killing anything and making friends, it gets even better.
this is no spoiling (for you), if you were to spare the final boss on your first run it would've told you the exact same thing, how to get your best ending.
oh also, fishes love water, so please give them some.

this is exactly what happened to me when I played it for the first time (although I didn´t immediately reset the game. I kept on playing for some hours until I couldn´t live with it anymore). And when flowey suddenly reminded me, it hit me like a truck

Like most people I killed Toriel first time around, but also Undyne. This game doesn't do a good job at giving you hints on the consequences of one action or the other, although that is also clearly intentional. I spared Mettaton so I get an ending where Mettaton rules over everything. Not very satisfying, but the music is fabulous.

There are 3 completely different endings. 
like, seriously. the narrative changes while playing these along with everything else. 
You've only seen one of them (neutral), which has the most variations depending on who you've killed or not killed.
Neutral is rather meh, the other 2 does this game justice.
