To be fair I think Obi-Wan Kenobi in general is the best part of the films. Ewan McGregor did about as well as any actor could hope to do amidst such awful cohorts. I think he did a good job. So give some credit to him too.

Ewan is one of my favorite actors but don't think he did particularly good job depicting Obi-Wan. Fight between him and Anakin at the end of RotS is cringe inducing (also awful CGI). That was probably the most important scene in prequel trilogy and they blew it.

Actor who was decent in prequels is Liam Neeson. His performance is silver lining of otherwise awful The Phantom Menace. Samuel L. Jackson looked so out of place and did terrible job imho.

Another actor that did excellent job is of course voice of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones. While it is considered iconic performance, it still can't hold a candle to his role of Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian. That is one badass movie that has aged very well imho. There are other movies from late 70s and early 80s that aged very well, don't consider Star Wars: A New Hope among them.

Edit: Damn, I forgot about late Christopher Lee. He was perfect in everything he did, same goes for goofy character of Count Dooku.

So I think I'll just watch the IV and then I'll see if I like it or not :)

When you watch the original trilogy don't watch Lucas' crappy re-releases, they look horrible and even change certain characters for the worse (Han Solo shot first).

The way I watched them was episode 5,6,4,1,2,3

Imo episode 5 is the most mature of the star wars movies.

If you watch ep.4 then you MUST watch ep.5, the difference in quality of the storytelling is like the difference between "Conan the barbarian" and "Gladiator".

Watch them 4-5-6-7.

Instead of watching the prequels, i would reccommend watching RedLetterMedia's Plinkett review of the 3 prequel movies, they are about movie lengt per review per movie, they are funnier, and more informative.

Its pretty damn good. I think ive seen through all the reviews like 4 times, thats more than ive seen through all the movies. The review has more rewatchability than the actual movies.

I think most Asians do the "R" thing, but are the Japanese known for aggressive boycotting?

Yeah dude they were notoriously exclusionist and didn't want any filthy foreigners (European or Chinese or anything else, didn't matter who) in their islands. No traders allowed. They did such a good job of locking themselves away from the outside world that they were still living it up like it was 969 AD with fuedal lords and samurai vassals paid in pounds of rice DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR WHEN WE INVENTED METAL-CLAD GUNSHIPS AND GATLING GUNS HOLY SHIT GET OVER YOURSELF JAPAN, WE HAVE ELECTRICITY AND INDOOR PLUMBING IT'S THE FUTURE OVER HERE

Kind of a derail for a Star Wars thread but Japan's history is pretty interesting.

One thing I like about the Star Wars films is that you can watch them multiple times and still pick up on new things, new theories every time you see them. I like watching them with my bro and sister cos we all grew up with ze Star Wars and although i'm the biggest Star Wars nerd out of them, we're all into it.

Latest viewing over Christmas (before seeing episode 7) I started to see Leia in a different light and it changed the way i then watched episode 7. Spoilering this essay due to size but also cos i talk a bit about episode 7:

Nice read, indeed something I never really thought of until now.

Watch the new one first. I strongly believe you'll get a better experience that way.

For me, I feel that having seen all the others just generally spoiled the movie. Let's just say it has too many of the tropes of the old trilogy.

Nice little minute-long edit (i was expecting there to be a gag, there isnt).

Damn Alec Guinness was an awesome actor. Even before they properly planned/fleshed-out the Anakin/Obi Wan backstory, the *looks* he gives during this scene speak 1000 words. Especially his face at the end

My favourite comment: 'my parents didn't sign my permission slip to go on this feels trip'

I haven't watched the original trilogy in many years, since before I saw the 3 more recent movies.

Holy shit, you're right. The thousand yard stares Obi Wan makes. I never realized how much of an "I've seen some shit" thing that scene was until just now.

That always was my favourite SW scene, nothing excited me more about SW than the mysterious clone wars when I was a kid, before the expanded universe books. Such a shame Lucas made it all seem so ridiculous when these scenes were realized in the prequels. The epic of Anakin Skywalker the best starfighter in the galaxy became little Annie at 8 years old with a child starfighter helmet, 'pod-racing' in a giant space battle by 'accident' blowing up the enemy control ship while delivering the most annoying punchlines and childish noises. And Darth Vader killing Anakin became the over-the-top CGI jedi duel, force jumping on moving platforms in a lava stream. The best part of the prequels is when they are back on dry land and Anakin burns and curses Obi-Wan and when he awakens in his sith armor suit and finds out he killed Padme.

Amazing that Alec Guiness was the guest star of the movie when Episode 4 came out. How times change. And apparently he wasn't too interested in the movie, did it for the paycheck.
