Leave a strat faction (that hasn't accepted/declined my membership)

How do you leave a strat faction that hasn't accepted or declined my membership request?  When I click the Faction tab, I don't get the option to leave.

And if I click on another Faction, I don't get the option to join.

Addendum: you can even join distant factions on strategus if you have their ID, using this link: http://strategus.c-rpg.net/send_action.php?action=joinFaction&id=xxx (xxx= ID).
This could prove critical in the earliest stage of next strat.
