I recognized her face!
Nah, I really don't know, just assumed it's the same one because (I hope) there aren't many of them around.

You wouldn't have to assume anything if you killed it the first time. Go full Ozzy on it!

Freaking cute. We have some here as well, but they are very shy and prefer to live in a hollow tree... :D
Hermit Status report : feeling a little social. Threatening melee my old friends with a comeback. Greasing the string of his old longbow. Carving certain names into the tips of his arrows...

I was driving boat last week and I swear I saw a bat flying over the ocean... about a quarter mile to a half mile from nearest coast.

I pointed it out to crewmember and he said maybe it was a moth, but it would have to be some monster sized moth... Thing looked like it had a wingspan of about 6 inches.

No doubt a new species of sea bat that sleeps in underwater sea caves w/ air pockets and then surfaces and flys to land to prey on insects only to fly back into its sea cave.

There's a group of bats living somewhere near my backyard. No idea where they are coming form, but in late spring and summer, I can often see them flying around at dusk. Never saw them during the day, and the night is of course too dark.

It has been like that ever since I've lived here.

There are a handful of moths with wingspans nearing or going past 6 inches in several continents, even northern areas that have heavy winters. It could have been a moth, or a bat. Either one is strange but I wouldn't put it past either of them to wander off the coast and get lost at sea.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

No that's crazy. Seabats for sure.

the biggest I've seen IRL is a cecropia moth. They seem HUGE AS FUCK in person, but there are larger moths out there, even here in my temperate climate. Don't need a rainforest to get monster bugs.

edit: a moth that large represents a huge investment of effort and energy on the moth's part. I always let big guys go in the wild with a habitat matching their species. They're a rare thing, and letting it die is like starving a lynx to death for the sake of keeping it.

Fly on, blind sailor. Seek your lady of the night...

This is the one I found upon researching giant moths in my location :3
Ascalapha Odorata
(click to show/hide)

I've seen many of them but only really small ones, usually inside houses.
We have so many birds here that I bet they all get eaten before they are ever able to grow this large large.

I still think it was a bat I saw because of its movement how fast it dropped inbetween flaps of its wings, but it's just a hunch... I really didn't get a really good look at it, was driving about 20 mph and it caught my eye  as it flew over boat and back towards shore.

Yeah moths at top speed are still really slow. If it was a bat, maybe it was skimming nocturnal bugs like gnats and shit over the water surface.
