Lifting and swimming are of limited use for your core/back.

Since I have started to do very light, but systematic calisthenics training and a little yoga/QiGong-style flexibility stuff ("Peaceful Warrior 3 minute Workout" - Dan Millman, best and most simple sequence ever), my back is totally happy. And I am old and sit on a normal wooden chair, not even a real "office chair".

Also: breathing. Learning to breathe consciously helps a ton with back problems.

And lastly: if you want to go for the quick pill instead - from my corporate slave times I remember those chairs with no back and where your knees are not forced into a right angle, but are bent...("kneeling chair", like the original balans http://www.amazon.com/Variable-Furniture-Original-Kneeling-Crimson/dp/B008VL977C) This type of chair emulates a healthy kneeling/squatting posture and keeps your back engaged and upright. Was the most comfortable type for me back then.

Lying on the ground is obviously included in "sitting around", i.e., resting/not doing anything. Sitting is the primate equivalent.

I was agreeing with you. :p

The most corporate person I know uses exactly the same chair.

http://www.dxracer.com/us/en-us/product/1/pc_gaming_chair/

Has anyone tried these DXracer chairs????

Everyone streaming on twitch seems to have one... The arm rests look really nice, I saw linustechtips reviewing something similar with same arm rests... they go forward, back, side to side, angle in or angle out and up and down... The back rest looks fairly non-customizable though compared to other $400-$500 chairs.
Nice thing is they do free shipping, which is nice since I'm in hawaii and shipping anything here usually costs a lot of monies... It wouldn't surprise me if their free shipping offer is void if mailing to hawaii though, like amazon prime free-shipping.
Also the DX chairs look a lot better than the crap I saw at office max for roughly the same price.
Downside is I'd feel like such a trendy nerd hipster jumping on dxracer bandwagon...

PS they're squatting, not sitting.  Plus humans never sat for 8-10 hours per day until they invented offices.

What about kings sitting around on a throne for 8-10 hours listening to smucks come in and complain that a dragon torched their children or ate all their goats?
Or how about pilgrims travelling the oregon trail by horse drawn cart/wagon to settle in the western united states?

So what if it is trendy? If you have the means, go try one and see if you are comfortable with it. As long as you feel good about getting one, it shouldn't bother you that everyone out there and their mother has one.

However, the 350-450-dollar price range is too much imho. Mine cost me about 50-60 Dollars. I mean you can still get roughly the same comfort and even design at better prices. If you think you can afford it without any problems though, well, go for it. No need to be bothered with the mainstream vibe.

that's true... I guess my main concern is that people buy them because of the hype or the looks rather than the quality... If they are actually popular because of the construction and comfort I wouldn't mind purchasing one at all.

I got like a 75$ costo office chair and the quality is trash... its like almost all mesh and it has foam padding near the lips of the seat where the mesh stretches over hard plastic... well all the foam padding fell off within a month, The backrest is non adjustable other than adjusting the spring tension on reclining and my arm rests only go up and down... I mean it's not horrendously terrible to sit in, but its quality and construction are definitely at the lower end. When I worked QA testing they had like 400$-500$ chairs and I must say those were not bad to sit in for multiple hours.

I have, they are more good looking than useful.
You get a pillow for your lower back or arch??? (sorry i is veri sweden) but it's does not really do its job.

I would say, get one of those corporate office chairs that have adjusting for all little things.

I've got a similar both at work and at home and it does its job. heavy as fuck tho'.
Dont have to go for the flagship as I did, spent almost 900$ for mine. but atleast get a chair with adjustable settings for your lower back for gods sake, or your own sake.

If you dont want to go for the "Sensei, no backrest or armrest chairuuuuuu" that is.

Happy hunting!

My chair atm:

Not as bad as it looks. Throw a cushion on the bottom and it's fine for hours.

Exactly what I meant. It obviously will make you more sexy as well. No kidding, chicks dig those chairs.

Not having back/arm rests is exactly the point, they are part of the problem, rarely a solution... :D

P.S.: even better - during work alternate between such a chair and working at a "standing desk", esp. great for creative work, better than slumping away 9 hrs in the same position... the one in the pic is a bit too high, but you get the idea.

Genau. Arm rests are often not ergonomically correct, I had to displace my old office chair for this very reason, as they put a strain on my elbows and shoulders.

Relying on your own muscles is usually a good thing, the best you can do for sitting well is training your back, chin-ups/pull-ups and push-ups are effective and easy exercises for this.

DXRacer looks like something from a kid's room, in my opinion, I think the only reason those Youtubers got it is because they had it for free through some PR stunt.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

Ok well for all of you preaching standing desks or the ergonomic kneeling chairs: answer me this...

How many hours per day do you actually stand use a kneeling chair while on a computer, on average?
Sure standing is best for your back, If you keep good posture, but do you really stand or kneeling chair while doing work/play on a PC for hours??? Be honest!

Something tells me you guys are doing more of a "do as I say, not as I do" approach to this.

@Overdriven
That wooden chair makes my back hurt just looking at it.

I got some buddies that just sit in lazy boy recliners... put the keyboard on their lap and mouse on the arm rest... and use a TV as monitor. I tried it out when I was at their house once... it was kind of funky using mouse on cushiony arm rest and balancing keyboard on lap but I must say it was damn comfortable. :P
