Depends. If you get a good quality hoe, you can trust it very far. I prefer mine with a wooden handle and metal on the end; the plastic ones can be a bit unreliable. Sounds like that's what you have experience with. I recommend metal ones in the future.

Most of the metal ones I've worked with tend to start bending eventually. The wood ones are better long term IMO
