Huscarl Shield just really shitty?

Does its larger width somehow make up for its otherwise terrible stats? Seems like there is no reason to use this shield over the heavy heater, or even the heavy Norman shields. If there is something I'm missing let me know.

Width is really important, both for ranged protection and not taking hits around the side of the shield. Huscarl's shield is definitely not weak, have you tried them both or are you just looking at stats?

Round shield have huge advantage over other, better protection both for melee and against ranged. The size of the heather to protect the foot is quite useless as it is very difficult for ranged to shoot the feet with almost any shield

Yes I've used both shields, and as far as I know (and have tested), the width of a shield has no effect on melee combat, only on incoming projectiles. So the huscarl's additional width extends the degree of protection from incoming projectiles, but in melee, it is greatly outclassed by other shields.

Yeah, the huscarl's shield is probably the best anti-ranged shield in the game. That said, it is severely outclassed in melee by plenty of other offerings (similar to how the heavy round is outclassed by the hand pavise, but once again the heavy round has better ranged protection). Whether or not the ranged protection is worth the trade-offs is up to you, I guess. And whether or not the trade-offs actually make sense is up to whoever the heck is balancing this mod nowadays.

lot of people with small weapons use them, its a good protection spam shield.

The auto block to ranged that the huscarl has while you are running at full speed is helpful and seems to happen more than other shields.  It is a gamble because it does not always work.  It is great when it does during those 2v1/3v1 ranged vs. huscarl.
