had to google what the fuck VPS is lol

Steal? If you want a proper server you'll obviously need to purchase it, eh.

Hard? Depends really on what you want to do. Hosting sites isn't hard. I'm guessing TS server administration is handled via a GUI so shouldn't be hard either (and there's guides on how to set up one most likely).

Buy/steal a physical server and store it in your tiny abode instead of a renting a rack server in a hosting warehouse. In the winter months your server will heat your home like a hearth of old. Especially if you use it to mine bitcoins when it's not in use for anything else.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

You're probably better off renting that shit. Might actually be cheaper than paying for electricity for an actual server box. If you're planning to use a Windows server, you might want to look at Azure. Or just find some local VPS provider, if there is such.

Administration difficulty entirely depends on what you plan to host and what you plan to subject the server to.

If you are good with linux, go for it. If not: don't.

Getting it set up properly, monitoring it, restoring it when it gets hacked (fuck yes, happens here and there, even if you are good), etc.etc...
Quite time consuming.

I have 2 VPS for quite a few years now, learned a lot - and I am moving my sites one by one to decent shared hosting and probably a managed server soon.

If you want to give it a shot - I am with Vanager, who are now part of Hosteurope - they are pretty good and have reasonable prices.

Many VPS providers offer "managed VPS" as well - bit more expensive, but well worth it if you have the money - all the basic server configuration shit, hardening, updates, etc. are handled by them, while you still have the advantages of a VPS (configurable, root access, etc.)

wat, what does this have to do with OS?

I need to host 2 websites for my project and the only language I know is Java, so it's not gonna be that easy as I imagined when the idea came to my head. And it would be nice to host a ts on it, but I don't think it's very resource-intensive.

If you know one language you know all, unless it's something retarded/ancient as COBOL, and again, hosting a webpage has little to do with actual coding

A typical VPS you have to administer yourself. So you need to be able to configure and maintain the OS yourself - they usually offer several combinations of different linux distros/webserver/config panels, still  you need to be able to configure/fix/secure things on the console.

(((and in case you wanted to hint at the fact that some hosters still offer VPS with windows server... much lol)))

Are you hinting it's not a viable alternative, especially for someone who doesn't know linux?

OK - I am not exactly a fan of Windows, except for gaming, so I am certainly biased. But from my experience in the industry and as a user I'd say: chances to getting your server abused by someone: much higher, because getting Windows server reasonably secure is even more time consuming, and no regular Windows desktop user knows how to.  And you need about 1.5-2x the CPU/memory resources to run a responsive webserver on Windows compared to a slim linux distro.

Certainly, but the word was viable, not better. You made it sound like 'know linux or get out' to host two (what I presume, pretty simple with low traffic) webpages. In the end it would also be possible to just buy webhosting+ts server, where they do the setting up for you (and you can get a linux server).
