Yes, you could've kept quiet and would've only lost as much as the 2nd highest bid. Now... i wouldn't be surprised if someone decided to troll you out of your gold.

How would keeping quiet help though? When the auction ends it takes the money I bid, right? I'm not exactly familer with how auctions work

No, it takes the highest bid - which in your picture is 50k. Now that everyone knows what your max bid is, they can up the highest to that at no cost or risk to themselves, if they so decide.
