had that problem once too. Bought new fan but problem still up.

I guess you have already tried that but it may help when you change his location.  Mine was in the corner of my room, was marooned by my table so he overheated all the time.

Then I just made some space around him and he was running fine, havent shut him done since 1 month and he is still working (rip soon anyway ;_;  )
Maybe if Coronoa virus gets rid of 50 percent or more of the world population we can do without a pope and religion.

Are you sure it is not overheating still?

That CPU- cooler should be able to function for some time even without a fan. Maybe thermal paste gone to shit and doesn't transfer heat anymore?

39-40 degrees should be perfectly fine for cpu temps

replace the fan, replace the paste, see what happens. also go into bios and check fan settings
If your worried about temps, add a case fan or two

EDIT: looks like your problem is solved

Might be something else overheating. My cpu runs over 80 degrees sometimes (LGA 775) but the actual side of the PC is cool - luke warm

You want good airflow through the case. With mine theres a big fan on the back sucking air out, one at the front pulling air in + PSU has a fan. I leave the side open a bit too (probably bad for airflow but its just what i'm used to doing)

Should be perfectly fine until the upper 60-s of celsius.

Hell laptops got even smaller space to ventillate air out, and they operate with 60-70 C just fine.

So I don't get it why you would be restarting with the temperatures you posted.

It's an AMD though, glad you replaced stock cooler

i had a heating issue with a laptop of mine, i at first thought it was the gpu overheating, which caused a stutter before it would just shut off.  Come to find out, it was one of my cores that was slowly melting and eventually just died.  Im no pc guru by anymeans, but check to make sure you arent having heating issues elsewhere.

It looks like you have nice internal fans for your CPU and GPU. Does your case have decent stock fans? A case fan is pretty cheap as far as computer parts go, and it helps a lot. Like others said, it could also be a thermal paste issue (not as scary to fix as you might think).

40C seems pretty low to trigger and overheating error. Maybe there's something that is causing the GPU to rapidly heat up and the fans take a second to catch up and kick into high mode?

edit: laptops are heat death bricks and that shit will happen if you have a single dust bunny stuck somewhere in the case. Charging your battery can produce a ton of heat and make your CPU flip out about the temperature as well if it's close to the AC jack.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far

If you have failing fans.. you can try to oil them. (not kidding)

I did this to my 580 when the fans started rattling and stopping. Drilled a small hole in the fans, applied mineral oil + sticker to close the hole.

Another time a cable got in the way of a gpu fan and I didn't notice why it wasn't spinning.. A friend of mine had thermal paste problem on his cpu.

PC repair stories... :D

Your rig is extremely similar to mine. If your case is similar too (with fan openings on top, one side, rear and front), what Cassia said must be your trouble. The location of your case probably prevents it from breathing in or out. See if you are allowing enough space around each fan, so that both intake and evacuation fans can work properly.

And just saying, with thermal paste: "Less is more".

Just make sure you cover the whole area completely and with smooth surface but with least amount of paste possible. Better heat transfer that way. I'm sure you already knew that but yeah...
