if the player who initiates combat can't make it for the auto 24 hour schedule, what happens?  Also, I saw something in the FAQ page about AI hiring.  Does that mean there will be AI players (bots) if i don't have enough people for a battle, or if i can't make it?

No. You have to hire people to show up.

If you cancel it's an auto loss.

Yeah, okay.  so if i don't show up, the battle will still go on without me, even though I am the one who initiated it?  Also, is there is no way to change the time of the battle?

Chose your attack time better. As an attacker, you chose the time, so chose what's good for you(or your clan/group/sextoys etc)
(in otherwords: No.)
