I'll be working towards helping however I can to make tavern games a thing. I'm pretty sure it was a hit in the Fable series. Going to do some research on what was available in the 13th century, and I'm sure chess will be on that list.

12th Century Scandinavian (viking-ish) chessmen found on the western Isles of Scotland, dunno if the rules were the same but chess certainly existed in some form. Happens to be pretty close to the era we're working with, so maybe even pieces modeled on these could be a thing.

For reference these are the Lewis Chessmen, on display in the British museum.

The rules weren't the same, but the differences weren't huge. There's a major book on board games from 1283 AD Toledo, which I think outlines the period rules for chess.

This site's pretty good for chesspiece archaeology.

Well, I don't see this happening outside a mod, but you never know.

As far as anyone knows, turned chesspieces weren't invented yet in this era, turning up only at the end of the next century, but Arabic/Persian pieces were fairly simple and standardised and this style was also still in use in Europe, though figurative works were becoming steadily more popular, from their appearance in probably the 11th century - probably most sets were still in the older style, afaik.

I think there wouldn't be a lot of point in doing it and not using authentic rules. If people wanted to play normal chess, they'd just boot up a dedicated chess game. That said, yes, there are plenty of different rule sets to choose from.
