Oh great, there goes my afternoon... loving it, got leader 2/3 times, lasted around 30 secs as such, max was around 950 points.
Also, is it me or does going further out give less points?

Seems like theres a base rate of points/second for surviving, and you get more points for orbiting the planet (like 1pt per 10 degrees or so), so orbiting closer at the same speed lets you cover more degrees. If you have an eliptical arc you can see you gain points faster as you get closer to the planet and are covering more degrees/s.

I prefer to play as a missile, keeping leaders in sight and when i see the opportnity spam click away like a rocket towards them.

It's actually more interesting to fly "normally" and make minute adjustments in order to hit the leader. when your trajectories meet, you will get a "target locked" message.
