What happened to the monocle movement?

A year or two ago when I was playing more regularly than I do now, and before I took a ~9-month hiatus from playing, at least 75% of the posts I saw around were from people with avatars with top hats, monocles, and even cigars. I see a lot of drawn (or something) avatars now, so it seems like that's been a newer movement, but I don't really like it. Bring back the monocles!

I've actually taken to using this avatar all over the place, even on my work's jabber server. I'm waiting for a coworker to ask me wtf my avatar is.
