It is true that I did not check his night-time, which was a mistake on my part. I wrongfully assumed it wouldn't be poorly set.
However, I do have a warrant to complain

because if he set his night-time in such a way, a prime-time battle is absolutely impossible. More fault lies with me than if it was a fief attack in which I could not possibly see his night-time setting, but most of the blame must fall upon the defending party and his faction.
@Unholy We consider allies/enemies to be relatively fluid. Things are very inactive on strategus, and we're going to do our part to attempt to revive things. As it turns out, if we make an enemy that becomes outnumbered and highly disadvantaged, we are likely to become their friend. The only time we've done diplomacy based upon liking or disliking a faction is against FCC last strategus, which is in the far past now.
