Yes, the US is somewhat complex in this regard, with great disparity between individual states. Much the same is the case with living standards, the upper and middle classes are pretty well off compared to comparable countries (little in the way of taxation, but also some of the worst public traffic, welfare, health care, schools and exorbiant tuition fees for higher education and together with the UK one of the developed countries with the least social mobility), but the lower classes are destitute in comparison, 15.9 million children live in food insecure households for example, which is just absurd for such a wealthy nation.
