Returning after 3 years what has changed?
« on: July 29, 2014, 01:54:25 am »

Hi,

I used to play this mod/game a long time ago. After playing many other games I thought back of some fond memories I had playing this and decided to give it another shot. However I haven't kept up at all with what changed to the game and mod. Could anyone give me some help? I have a MW sword of war and Saracen Guard Armor. Are those still good?
Thanks in advance!

Edit:
So I just started playing again, but all attributes have been refunded and I don't want to spend them incorrectly due to lack of knowledge on what has changed. Also the patch notes are so many that it is hard to check what changed. :/

Welcome back!
I might suggest you start a STF and try out a few builds first.
I'd link the big changes but it'd take forever to find them.

There was one recently which actually refunded attribute and WPF points to everyone...
Let's see. They were primarily requirement changes on weapons, horses, and WPF. I think.
Arbalest is now 18 STR. Riding requirements on horses changed (the rouncey is now 4. There is no 3 riding skill horse, if you had points there).
WPF is no longer acquired each level- it is strictly gained through Weapon Master points.
As a reminder, archery and throwing both require 14wpf points per level of PD or PT.
Remember if you're using heavier armor, any weight will decrease active wpf.
This means you'll need some buffer wpf as well.
If you don't have enough, you'll get some red text warning about it the moment you spawn.

Say you're at 6PT and have 90 WPF in throwing.
The moment you throw that Saracen Guard Armor on, you'll drop quite a bit in active WPF.
You'll still be able to use the throwing stuff (or a bow or whatever), but your active PT will drop to 4 because now you only have like... 60 active WPF.

Anyway, hope that helps!

Haha! Thanks for the update. I was browsing through the thread on suggested builds and decided on the following:
 * Strength: 18
    * Agility: 21
    * Hit points: 57

    * Skills to attributes: 8

    * Ironflesh: 2
    * Power Strike: 6
    * Shield: 1
    * Athletics: 7
    * Riding: 0
    * Horse Archery: 0
    * Power Draw: 0
    * Power Throw: 0
    * Weapon Master: 7

    * One Handed: 1
    * Two Handed: 164
    * Polearm: 1
    * Archery: 1
    * Crossbow: 1
    * Throwing: 1
Note: Shield and IF amount change to style.

This was pretty close to what I used to run and I can retire once I hit 31 to try something different. I guess I will feel what changed.

What Jeade said. Some may have been there before you left.

Also:
-Nudges and shield bashes were added
-Kicking lost the ability to block at the same time
-A turn rate limit was imposed on all overheads and stabs. It was later changed to a turn rate limit based on weapon weight and length for each class
-pole stagger removed
-The short ranged stagger removed. Long ranged stagger occurs rarely when receiving powerful shots
-Crushthrough weapons need to hold overheads to guarantee crushthrough, but the crushthrough damage was increased
-Ranged damage reduced against limbs, increased vs headshots
-Holding your attack too long reduces your damage
-Sweetspots were tightened for all stabs. Delays were added to stabs' startups as well
-Extra delay on 1h/2h left swings against blocks (barely noticeable after people got used to it)

I think those are the major mechanics changes off the top of my head.

-1h right swing and stab was improved
-polearm left swing and overhead were sped up
-Shield durability increased and weight decreased
-Horse difficulties increased for heavy horses.
-Lighter horses made more durable, fast horses less maneuverable and maneuverable horses less speedy
-Many changes to weapons. It's easier to just look around.
-Gloves unchanged

Fuck me, I didn't even know that was a thing.

Perfect summary though.
Hydro, that build looks like it should work!
I'm ranged though, so if you want to go ahead and skip the IF and shield, that build will be spot on perfect.

That build, weapon, and armor are well-suited for current cRPG. Just remember that although 3 years ago the SoW was actually one of the faster weapons, most people use ~100 speed weapons now, so prepare to be spammed frequently. But if you focus on attacking unaware people (like you should anyway), you will be racking up the kills in no time.

Thanks for all the advice and updates! I am getting the impression  ranged got nerfed and 1h shield got buffed. Is this correct?

Is this just a meta change, or did other weapons get nerfed?

Phew would be able to tell you about the 1h/shield situation.
I can assure you ranged, particularly bows, have been nerfed.
Missile speed is significantly lower, arrows weigh 8 now (which incidentally had an adverse effect on active archery WPF), etc.

As for the ~100 speed weapons, I'm thinking it was mostly a meta change, yeah.
I do believe a number of 2h swords did get speed increases though.

Again, I'm a ranged guy; Phew or San will be of better help.
Hopefully that's at least somewhat useful until they get around to a reply though.

1h got buffed (better right swing animation and thrust animation), shield is about the same as it was 3yrs ago (except for the addition of the shield bash/nudge mechanics). You used to be able to just lolspam against someone trying to stab you with a 1h, since they would just glance; now 1h thrust is one of the deadlier attacks.

Ranged was pretty much consistently nerfed for the 3 yrs you were gone. Throwing lances are barely even worth dodging, and archers can't hit anything now.

It should also be noted that all the shields received a weight reduction. The intent was to help 1h shielders not crawl around everywhere, which it does help with a little, however this now allows crushtrough weapons to decimate any 1h shielder. The odds of any type of crushthrough weapon successfully bypassing your shield, even without holding it first (which increases the likelihood of crushthrough), is really high. You are better off blocking maul overheads with your weapon rather than use your shield.

As a 2hander with a heavy weapon, you should be relatively safe from this... just something to keep in mind in case you pick up a maul at some point. Spam those overheads on poor shielders!
