I installed Dawn of War II the other day, so far one the best 40k videogames I've seen.

My old custom chapter thread on Dakka: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/539935.page

As you can see I am super bad in writing, but hey.. i enjoy doing it. :)

I then lost interest in spessmahrines and fell in love with the imperial guard armoured regiments(mostly due to reading Gunheads and my general affection for armoured vehicles)

Also before anyone goes full retard on the parts of shit that arent 100% correct fluffwise: I dont care, I do this solely for fun and because I find the 40k universe very immersive, but I dont care about the details.

As I said earlier, when it comes to fluff 40k 'nerds' get really fucking annoying and unpleasant to be around. :)

I do think so, but what youll most likely see is that it hugely differs per world. In Gunheads a Lt Gen was mentioned to have fought as a tank commander himself, though it is hard to extract a clear conclusion I think it is safe to say that it does happen.

If you take the Cadia, its a world(or a group of worlds?) that is fully militarized, so I do think infantry, IF they would survive long enough (IF IF IF) could be promoted to a staff function, though what you mostly see is, fm the books ive read, is that guar get promoted for showing bravery and heroisme in the face of the enemy.

But, to be fair, a guardsmans live is practicly worth less then his gun - shows how ruthless the 40k universe is. Most will die, but some will be promoted.

I also think with the Valhallan regiments that there is a certain aristocracy that often holds the higher ranks, but i cant remember exactly.
Great book btw is Fifteen Hours, really short but powerfull story - shows exactly how expendable a guardsman is.
I loot corpses of their golden teeth.

Satisfying the OP and purpose of this thread i have a question - in the Imperial army, do you only achieve ranks through merit, or is there some aristocracy there? For example, was a Lord General always once a basic infantryman, or are they privileged people who come in with rank? If thye've had to survive enough battles to gain that rank from being just an infantryman, i think that makes them some of the most badass characters in the universe, cos those infantrymen drop like flies xD

As far as I know in the 40k universe the imperial guard distinguishes between the lower ranks (normal troops, squad leaders...) and officers. Officers are being trained differently and are usually never a "grunt". Though they do participate in battles if the situation requires it (that means being overrun and either fight or die). In general they do show up on the battlefield but rather just command and keep an eye on the overall situation than being busy with tunnel vision shooting.

Space Marine is an awesome game, so brutal

Also, first DoW, with expansions, just seems so much more fun to me than DoW2.

If you haven't played it, then you should try it, in order: Dawn of War, DoW Winter Assault, DoW Dark Crusade. Soulstorm expansion is generally considered to be inferior (it was made by a different company, afaik).

Another fun 40k game is Rites of War - it is an older tactical strategy game, quite challenging and fun, has a lot of progression to it as well.

They nailed the sounds in Space Marine, the walking really sounds as if you are clad in a steel armor and firing that bolter feels like throwing tiny Mjolnirs around

I guess that would be in keeping with the British Army parallels. And even if it was like that, to get to Lord General or similar high rank that's still a ton of campaigns that you'd have to complete/survive from 'lieutenant'
To be honnest, a lot of countries all around the world proceded like this. :)

If you still want to compare the Imperial Guard with our countries in the world, i would say that the old Russia Communism is by far the closest one.
(and not only because of the commisar  :D )

I'll get a look at this one. :)

By the way, now they are working on another game named : "Eternal Crusade"
Here the link : https://www.eternalcrusade.com/
I really don't know what to think about it (yet)

:S sucks mate, I for some reason cant play the multiplayer mode, as soon as I get into an online game the textures go batshit crazy - the visual effect is very much like the matrix, half of my mrine will suddenly be light green particles.

What happened that it crashed?

Actually, it is mentioned that some guardmen spend their entire lives on a single world, i think there is even mention of second generation of the said guardsman fighting alongside their fathers.

Got to see itin perspective, this is not country vs country, but rather world vs world. Wars in the IoM are wars of attrition, when it comes to the imperial guard that is. Spacemarines are q tacticly strong asset that is used selectively and where it is most needed.

10000 marines per chapter aint alot for a galaxy as large as ours!

Cathapractii Pattern Terminator armour - used mostly during the great crusade..

So pretty!

Huehue Magnus the Red, looks so evil.. Even though he was good..

Btw, y do you think Horus is badly made here? I think hes portrayed pretty good. He was iirc a very charismatic leader.

I freaking love Magnus & Dorn.
Magnus loyal till the end !

About Horus : Well its the point...
On this picture in my opinion he doesn't look so charismatic. (He looks more "evil" and doubtfull)
edit: I mean for me, how is he here is the Horus slighty corrupted (time or Istvaan III) and not the one described in the first book.
(Which will come a bit after Ullanor's triomph)

For me Horus is like this :

I see what you mean yeah, the artist is apparantly not that good with faces, or he is only good in making angry expressions..

Yeah, I know that pic, there he does show a kind of warm heartedness, where he shows a.. Sarcastic smile? In the other picture.
