For all the non-believers, look no further than this thread for proof that while strat battles are won/lost in NA3/EU3, strat wars are won and lost on the forums.

Play as what you enjoy the most. I became okay at melee even though I only like ranged and use melee mainly for self-defense. Dedicated shielder is too passive, twohander too much the ideal of fantasy book fanboys, and polarm too easy to be enjoyable for me without hybridizing into ranged. And in the end, I get more melee kills on my archers, throwers and crossbowers than on the dedicated melee gens I played, just because playing something I don't enjoy makes me careless.

The most important thing is haing fun, and it sounds like you are :)

I bought M&B just to play crpg, and never played any native. I got totally fucking rekt all the time, I think I died 50+ times before I got my first kill, and I was super fucking happy.

A lot of the guys posting here are better players than me, and have posted some good advice,  so all I can say is keep having fun and you will improve.

Since you seem to have already decided to stick around you should probably just bite the bullet and learn to do decent manual blocking. I think the best way to start with this is launching the Native tutorial and block the bots that are standing around somewhere there. Put combat speed to slowest in the options and start with the novice trainer. Move on to the next difficulty trainer when you can block 10 times without a single failure, when you pass the last difficulty trainer, put the combat speed to one higher and repeat. At least up unto normal speed, could go to faster and fastest though. Try to move around while blocking after a while, and try to attack back sometimes, but focus on your defense. If you go through this procedure you will most likely develop the muscle memory required for blocking in the space of 1-3 hours.

Learning to block as a shielder is still useful as your shield can break, but more importantly it helps you understand the combat, allowing you to be better at attacking manual blockers as well. From there on out getting better is all about analyzing why you died and trying to think of a way to prevent it next time. Also watch other shielders or players in general play and try to understand how they deal with the problems you encounter.

For some very first practical advice on your difficulty with twohanders, make sure you click attack right after you hear the blocking noise. The windows are small, you have an advantage because the other guy is stunned after he gets blocked, but wait like 100 ms and your advantage is well gone. I believe some players even attack slightly before the block, as shield blocking is slower and thus sticks a little, I do not recommend this to an average player. Make sure your weapon does not have to travel too far to hit, which severely slows your attack down and giving room for counterattacks. You should pick your attack based on your camera positioning. Look at how the left and the right attack work and use them accordingly. If you do a right swing and your enemy is to the left of the center of your screen, your attack needs to travel way too far. Lastly, the fast twohanders can often attack too fast to do an attack within due to footwork, so called hiltslashing, so sometimes you will have to block twice.

In case you don't want or cannot improve, the below average player should probably stick with people he recognized as capable players and fight with them. If you can't play well, you should at least play smart. Help out your team, they will surpress the ability of enemies to attack, making it easier to get hits in.

The bold helped me immensely when I started out. It doesn't necessarily mean you'll be amazing at blocking vs players since players feint and have footwork that the bots don't. However you will do much better and see when to block and where much clearer after doing well vs the bots in native training. Maybe a goal of blocking once then twice in a row then 3 times in a row up to maybe 5 or 6 times. It helps a lot. But once you get that down, you will notice yourse;f doing much better in battle/siege as you get better vs actual players.

I'd also second someone's suggestion to get a longer weapon. Picks are not very long and a sword of some kind would probably help with s key heroes as you're learning how to play better.

Good luck to you though. I would also suggest removing your shield after some point and only using your 1h but only after you feel secure in your ability to block more than 1 or 2 hits from players in general. It will help force you to learn footwork especially vs 2h/polearm with their much longer reach and your lack of shield. Simply blocking won't get you anywhere so you'll be forced to learn how to get in closer to be able to hack away at them and how to move around them without a shield being there to help you out.

I'll give the same advice that I always do to people trying to get better; once you bite the dust in battle, don't alt-tab and look at dumb shit on the internet. Watch a very good player and pretend that you're them next round. Try to emulate their style and movements. Once you've got someone else's effective playstyle down, you can work on your own.

Spectator mode is a hell of a thing,

A good thing to try to do vs 2hand / pole users or other 1handers for that matter is to try to chamber them, could be risky but is very rewarding and could help you fuck  / stress them up for the rest of the fight and they might not spam as much. But one thing to do is to hit at them the moment their weapon hits your shield, preferably with a fast attack. And since 1handers are shorter than the 2hand / poles keeping close to them and not giving them space is a good thing.

Like what Havelle said, I would hang out with a group of chill players that you can play with. When I started, I was above average at NW but I blew at cRPG. Bunch of guys in GoW really helped me out by just talking to me on how to get better and tips on weapons and stuff like that. They also provide a stack for you to rely on if your day isn't that day.

Just recapping the thread, lots of good points made already.

-spectate good players after you have died.

-hang out with people in teamspeak, they'll answer a lot of questions that in-game players can't be assed to type out

-try to look at why you died and what you can do to prevent it next time

Try to make your playstyle equal parts attack direction, footwork, and manual blocking even when you are using a shield. Just train yourself to move and block as if you did not have a shield. Even if you do stick with a shielder build, there will always be times when your shield is broken or you are facing someone that can break it in seconds.

Even if you really like the gear you have and it is loomed and you love it to death, try new items from time to time. You might find that a different weapon or lighter/heavier armor just feels "right." Especially after you have more experience and your playstyle changes.

irl something shorted on the shuttle and laika overheated and died within a few hours of liftoff and for a brief while one could look up to the stars and see a light shooting across the sky that was actually a warm dog corpse slingshoting about the earth at thousands of miles per hour which was arguably humanity's greatest achievement so far
