1H/Shield Advice?

Coming up on 31 with with my 21/15 shielder and I've been doing okay by my standards.  Not sure if I want to retire for that loom point or just suck it up for another level.  I wanted to get some feedback on possible paths from here.

I've thought about retiring and trying an 18/18 build, and seeing if I feel the extra Athletics.  I'll still have 6 Power Strike and Ironflesh so it won't be so bad, I hope.

As for gear, I'm still not quite sure if I have the "right" setup.  I don't know if I'm overdoing it, or if I could possibly carry more.  I just started with what looked good and went from there.  I wanted to wear a Heraldic armor, so I bought the lightest Heraldic Mail in the shop.  I matched it up with the Kettle Helmet and Mail Chausses, as they were also 10 Difficulty and seemed to match.  Is this "wrong?" I topped my gear off with an Elite Cavalry Shield and Military  Cleaver.  Might try and get some looms on the cleaver.  I like the reach and hit box of the cleaver and it does decent damage while not being too slow.  Might try the Elite Scimitar out for a change.

That's what I'm currently running and wanted to see what those more experienced than me thought of it so that I could possibly tweak it next gen.

Seems fine to me.  Gloves provide a nice bonus to armor for little added weight.  If speed (maneuverability) are very important, you might think about adding some (maybe you are using some, but forgot to mention them).

As for weapons, I use various swords as my main weapon.  But I also carry a cheap 1-handed axe as a secondary weapon.  I use it when I come across other shielders.  If they have a sword as well, I can break their shield first, then switch to my sword.

To save money, I personally so with the One Handed Axe (cost 1,582 gold).  Upkeep is only 110... which is the main reason I take that particular axe.  If I was rich, I'd take the Broad One Hand Battle Axe.  I'd still use my sword against light armor and for duels.  I'd use the axe in main mode (the axe head) to break shield.  And if I came up against tin-cans, I'd use the axe in secondary mode (the pick-side for pierce damage).

By the way... I suck... so take it all with a grain of salt!

Generally, medium/light armor seems best for shielders for me, otherwise people just s-key you all day, so your equipment looks fine.

All melee weapons have the same kind of hitbox (a straight line). The only difference the models make is that they confuse some people when they try to block, especially when it comes to curved swords or really thin models (picks, spathlovikon)

General advice for 1H/shielders (A lot of this will probably be considered incredibly huge dick moves/BM):

Really short weapons tend to glance less in hugging distance (I suspect this is mostly just low length allowing you to go further in the animation without hitting something, + high speed to make up for it)

If you're going to have 6 PS and use a cut weapon, you should bring a backup pierce weapon vs loomed medium/heavy plate armor. The pricier axes are perfect for this, since they swap to a slightly less powerful/slightly slower pick in secondary mode. A loomed rondel dagger also works well, but expect your opponents to complain about dagger/shield use, especially if you "180 degree stab".

If you're going to main a pierce/blunt weapon, loom a cheap axe for smashing shields.

As you go up in foot speed, maneuvering through your opponents with nudges becomes more viable, try to make them teamwound each other as much as possible. If nothing else, nudging your closest opponent generally leads to a free hit on another opponent, since many don't actively block if they're not the "main target".

Even if fighting a solitary opponent, nudging, moving past, then overheading from behind or stabbing with a dagger (longer stuff usually just glances) from behind is difficult to block for someone with average skills, since they'll have to block up/down, then turn to face your attack.

Block up vs throwers if they jump when you close in on them in melee, or free headshot.

If you're having a lot of trouble landing a hit on really good AGI lightly armored/naked melee fighters, just keep neutral shield nudging the hell out of them, it'll deal enough to kill them or make them run away out of sheer annoyance, and they generally don't have good shield smashing weapons.

If you outnumber some pole/2h hero, neutral nudge spamming them will let teammates kill them more quickly than you attacking, unless you're good at coordinating simultaneous different attack directions.

I'm currently doing a gen as an agi shielder (15/21)

I don't see anything wrong with your choice of equipment but having just switched from 2 gens of polearm use, 1h is definitely a lot different. Being a strength based shielder can be difficult as most 2h/polearms will use their superior reach to backpeddle safely away from your shorter weapons. That's why I think strength shielders are best at sticking with the main force and protecting teammates rather than hunting archers/dueling stragglers.

I'd recommend a heavier shield and heavier armor (if you can afford it). As always test your builds on STFs before putting them into action on your main. Good luck
