Thrower Build

Hi, Ive been looking around for some thrower builds but they seem a bit tricky to find, more specifically, Ive been having a bit of trouble picking an optimal build.

Basically my problem is deciding between pure thrower and hybrid and what gear to specialize on. What I had in mind was trying to do a shield hybrid, but then it doesnt seem very possible due to the stat/skill distribution, Im not sure if you have to be a pure thrower in order to use shields. Next, Ive seen some people saying hybrids arent worth it anymore, and others who say theyre good. I would appreciate any opinions you guys might have or hints regarding the build, whether you think pure or hybrid is better, if shield thrower is viable or not, if my best option would be a pure thrower or a polearm hybrid, etc.

I would also appreciate any hints regarding what weapons to use for each possible build.

Thank you.

I'm using

15/24

5 pt
5 ps
8 wm
8 athl

130 throwing, 140 1h

with heavy throwing axes for 19 generations now. And i love the build.

However, you're vulnerable. My "Style" is being fast, switching weapon modes and using throwing and onehanded almost equally.

Usually i'm using a leathervest, leathergloves, rus cav boots and a felt cap - which allows me to run quite fast :D.

But 15/24 (with that wpf) also enables you to use more ammo and / or a 1h sword as sidearm - however no shield.

But I can imagine 15/21 would be also quite a nice build:

5ps,
5pt,
7wm
7athl
6shield

and round about 120 - 130 wpf both 1h and throwing.

For a shieldbuild tho, you should ask Zliced Bacon. He seems quite succesful with his.

Mendro is using different throwing weapons and medium armor with high pt - and his build is quite awesome too.

But as a long time thrower (tried several other builds too), my personal advice would be choosing speed over armor and shield.

Hope that helps.

Here's what I like using:

21/15 Thrower + shield

Level 30 (4 420 577 xp)

    Strength: 21
    Agility: 15
    Hit points: 56

    Skills to attributes: 2

    Ironflesh: 0
    Power Strike: 7
    Shield: 5
    Athletics: 5
    Riding: 0
    Horse Archery: 0
    Power Draw: 0
    Power Throw: 7
    Weapon Master: 5

One Handed OR Polearm: Rest (112)
Throwing: Whatever you need to still throw after PT penalty, varies with armor, I tend to use armor sets that don't give WPF penalties. (78)

Weapon loadouts:
Throwing Lance x 2
Round Steel Buckler
0 slot throwing weapon or 1h, depending on your proficiency choice

Throwing Lance
Any 1 slot throwing weapon x 2 (use axes if you're using 1h proficiency)
Round Steel Buckler

Haven't played with +3 HTAs much, but they are really nice against squishy archers. I just like lances because they tend to two shot most unarmored cavalry and +3 loomed medium armor users.

Despite the round steel buckler's size, I found that I have very little trouble blocking projectiles most of the time, but you should always try to grab a better shield just for the HP vs melee when your slots are free, which tends to happen very fast.

i used this exact same build before the recent patches, throwing lance hoplite with 3 lances and a heater shield, was the most fun build i ever used in crpg, plus i could practically 1-shot everything and still dish out damage in melee.

but now im rocking

21/18

WM: 6
ATH: 6
PS: 4
PT: 7

155wpf in throwing
(and 4wpf in pole )

carrying 2 stacks of throwing lances

not a shield build, but still very good
You are a horrible human being clockwork.

If i ever get muted on forums, contact me on crpg.net

Had a 21/15 Hoplite Thrower.  But that was when Throwing Lance required 7 PT.  I would use a spear, elite cav shield, & a set of throwing lances.  Or a war spear, steel round buckler, & a set of throwing lances.

But after the latest patch, I respec'd to 18/18.  Just got back to lvl 30 a few days ago.

The only trouble I had with my hoplite thrower was against shielders.  They'd block throwing lances.  Then they'd hug me when I'd try to melee as hoplite.  So I'd have to put up my shield and melee with just my spear.  I kind of suck at blocking.  So against a shielder who can block a major of my spear blows, I'd eventually lose out.

So I came up with this solution, which I attempted on my way back to lvl 30... with decent results.  My new layout is a set of Throwing Lances, an Elite Cav Shield, and a set Heavy Throwing Axes.

This is quite the versatile build.  It gives me 2 lances & 2 axes to throw (keeping one each for melee).  I now have an axe for melee, which I use solely for breaking shields.  The elite cav shield helps defend in melee, but even more so against ranged (especially against HA).  When I'm with a crowd of teammates, I can still hoplite... melee with a throwing lance & shield.  When I fight solo against someone hugging me, I can put up the shield, and the throwing lance makes a great weapon by itself (has good speed).  Playing hoplite really helps against cavalry as well.  They tend to avoid you all-together when they see you with a spear & shield... especially when they know you can throw that spear as well.  With that said, I do miss the spear & war spear (even more so)... because their reach did help against Cav.  With that said, a nice trick that I find is to act like you are going to throw your lance at a Cav.  If he's coming head on at you, he'll try to ram you, hoping you don't have time to release your throw... or at the very least, still get a stab or bump in if you hit his horse but don't kill it.  But at the last second, I switch to melee mode and let off of the LMB.  You'll immediately melee attack with your throwing lance... halting the horse.  It's a nice move.

Mind you, I still get most kills from throwing weapons.  This build is also pretty effective as a hoplite... to get kills while in a big melee scrum (supported by teammates of course).

See build in spoiler below.  Obviously you'll have to adjust your Throwing WPF to match your armor weight.  I wear the Saracen Lamellar Cuirass at 10.3 weight.  My total weight is about 13.5 weight.  80 WPF was actually enough for effective WPF (to pick throwing weapons back up).  But I like the little extra, just in case I make a slight armor change.  And I took some 1-hand WPF.  You could keep it at 1 WPF, and add it to Polearm instead.  Probably should have done that, as I only use the axe for breaking shield.  But it would have only given me 130 in polearms... so I thought the extra WPF in 1-hand might help with me break shields (quicker hits, more hits, more damage to break it shields quickly... then switch to throwing lance in melee... or back away and where I can now throw at him without his shield).
