http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=7622 - Lazynewbpack, allows you to easily tweak the game so it's not repulsing - in graphics choose Ironhand or Phoebus - it'll just look like a pixel game and not matrix soup. Also make sure Aquifer is turned OFF, because it's a bitch to deal with))

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide - basically a big fat mechanics intro, will set you up for a good game to not get thrown away
http://forum.melee.org/general-discussion/how-long-will-the-na-survive/ - follow the Wiki guide for mechanics and cRPG thread to know what to do, and maybe you'll learn to play and enjoy it :D It's great fun if you have patience for text-based combat and stuff, especially with newest patch coming that is going to add construction building to Adventurer mode.

My first fortress died because I had nothing to drink and eat, that's usually how each first fortress ends up :D

That, or were-monsters

Growers+brewers+cooks+someone to craft barrels or pots proven to be the easiest start for me. Good food is great for trading and you are covered on all your basic needs.

I always take 2 miners minimum, woodcutter, a doctor, and others. Prepared food is ridiculously good for trade, and makes those whining drunks happy))

Who doesn't love a plump helmet roast with minced plump helmet, minced plump helmet and minced plump helmet?

I had a carpenter and metalsmith next to all those.

I didn't get to the trade part yet. Last I checked I sorted out the food problem, couldn't figure out how to farm yet, yes I am that noob.

This game is tiring, but it is really fun. Gonna start a new game with all the info I gathered today

[b]uilding - farm [p]lot - designate it's height and width with um and kh (3x3 is generally good enough)

It's those pretty green X's, a 4x4 farm plot (two tiles blocked due to some stupid plants)

Also make sure you have no yellow warnings like in this case - No mud/soil for farm. You'd have to either water the area for soil to form, or place the plot inside the mountain, in a digged out soil walls.

After that, select the farm plot, and select what plant you want to plant in WHICH SEASON (thats important - some plants can only be planted during certain seasons, but plump helmets are most universal and work in all)
(click to show/hide)
Select the one you want, and either choose it for each season or just press Shift+Enter with the correct plant selected)

I used youtube tuto to learn to play. Maybe it takes a bit more time but if you are lazy as me it's great to avoid reading.  8-)

You seem to have great fortress Uthyr, you could make a "How long will the fortress EU survive?" thread, that would be great!  :D (try to find a mod to rename goblin as syrians for better visibility in off topic)

So I embarked in a Freezing Haunted Badlands today.

Firstly it started raining goo, all of dwarves got covered in shit, then a pack of ice wolves arrived, killed 3 of them dwarves and a yak bull, at that moment I was like "Okay I can survive this" but then a Blizzard Man appeared, killed anything left from the wolves.
