"The system of imperial units or the imperial system (also known as British Imperial) is the system of units first defined in the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824, which was later refined and reduced. The system came into official use across the British Empire."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_the_United_States

needless to say, the attempt to go metric failed in the 80's.

Don't put the blame on the British!

They may have introduced it but you're still using that garbage.
Although, at least the scientific sector is already using metric, dunno about engineering.
When west germany annexed east germany, nobody moved a finger too.

The thing is, if you grow up using those units it all makes sense through sheer experience, while the metric system always makes sense. So it's basically just the metric raised people that have problems the imperial 'system'.

UK still uses many imperial units O.o

we still use miles, yards, pints, ounces, stone, pounds, Feet and inches for height, Acres,

we use the ton and tonne

The British ton (also used in other countries that have the Imperial system of weights and measures) is equal to 2,240 pounds or 1,016.047 kg. It is sometimes referred to as the “long ton”, “weight ton” or “gross ton”.

The North American ton (only used in the United States and Canada) is equal to 2,000 pounds or 907.1847 kg. It is sometimes referred to as the “short ton” or “net ton”.

we cheat like this and use both :D

I work in the building industry and most things are supposed to be metric but most screws are in imperial and everyone just measures to whats closer :D our metalwork is often 2 inch or 6 inch etc

Try building a house, or ANYTHING, and use metric units. Then do the same thing with Imperial Units. Much much easier.
That is a huge load of horseshit.

Not only they still use horrible and outdated systems for defining lenght, temperature, weight and so on, But they are fucking PROUD of it.

. IE 80 degress versus 85 in Fahrenheit is a big difference. In Celsius that's a .2 difference.
? wat

80 degrees fahrenheit =26.6 celsius
85 fahrenheit =29.4 celsius

How is that any harder to read than 80/85

Certainly, all the Europeans manage it, considering 39 celsius is a huge fever whereas 36.6 is a normal temperature. Yet people somehow don't get confused nonstop about whether or not they have a fever.
Meaning lies as much
in the mind of the reader
as in the Haiku.

Anders and AntiBlitz are pretty much spot on.  However, both measurements are taught and used in the US, just with more emphasis on the imperial system.  So it's not like we're completely blind to the metric system, we just have a preference to the alternative.
