Air Force advice: There is a regulation that governs assignments. I forget which regulation it is, but you have to read it the moment you're done with boot camp/technical training. Trust me on this. I hand picked every single assignment I got, and I worked the system. Knowing that regulation will help you get wherever you want to be. My assignments:
Hill AFB (Traded for it. Originally had Davis Monthan in AZ, but knew that base was going away. The guy I traded with ended up in Oklahoma)
Flobecq Belgium (Dream sheets work. You can leave your first base after a year of service. Subsequent stateside bases at the time were a minimum 2 year stay)
Another Belgian Assignment (Married Military to Military, but used the regulation to move there instead. By regulation, you have to be within 50 miles of your spouse)
McGuire AFB (Base of Preference application. Funny thing is, I didn't have to sign on for another four years... loved that regulation)
Also... more advice. Figure out what you want to do and go for it. Seriously, there are ASVAB test guides out there. Use them, and prep, much like you would the SAT's. The higher your score in each category, the more your future is YOURS. When you see the recruiter, ask for guaranteed jobs. Some of them have signing bonuses, and faster promotions. That means more money in your pocket, and it also means you get to do something you like.
