There is a lot more information on caravaning thanks to the new "Party - General" interface.
Every horses (including donkeys) can carry 1 crate.
1 crate of good or 1 crate of weapons/armors that cant fit on your troops (the not "worn" items).
Donkeys - Sumpters = slow horses (low speed bonus)
Rounceys and above = fast horses (high speed bonus)
Army with more horses than crates: lesser speed penalty
Army with more horses than crates and troops combined: speed bonus.
Everything you said except this is right.
Actually you have to have as much or more horses (
>=) than you have troops
OR crates, whatever is the higher (not combined).
Like you said, army size and weight matters so, if you have say, 1000 troops and 1000 crates crates and you have 1000 horses, you will go at your maximum possible speed, but still lesser than if you had 100 troops instead of 1000 (each troop "weight", + their equipment).
Still, in my first example, you dont need 2000 horses with your 1000 troops and 1000 crates.
Virtually, it works like this:
- every trooper are atop the best horse available
- every horse carry 1 crate maximum on the side
thus if you have 1000 troops, and 1000 crates, each horse will have a mounted soldier, + 1 crate attached to it, and will go at maximum speed.
This is the capacity of horses, and having 1 horse with only 1 troop on it and no crate, or 1 crate and no troop, will not go faster.
