That is - ofc - completely true.
My experience is though that most bikers are much more aware of their surroundings in traffic than the normal car driver. "We" look around more often and with experience "we" actually actively avoid a lot of potential crashes by recognizing careless car drivers at a distance.
It simply comes down to experience really. At a certain point you start to look out for certain car models, certain types of drivers, certain repeating situations in traffic... that helps a lot to keep you alive. Not to mention other tactics and movements bikers do to create more visibility for themselves. Simple things like driving left to right in the dark when some car wants to turn into your lane, making yourself more noticeable... there's a bunch of stuff, most of it becomes an automatism with time.
